The result, Chateau Montrose was classified a second growth in 1855 and is undoubtedly one of the most famous wines of Bordeaux. Chateau Montrose is situated in the Medoc. The vines of this 94-hectare estate form a single block around the little village of the Chateau, winery buildings and winegrowers' houses. The vineyard is planted on a gravelly rise with a layer of large pebbles four to six metres deep. The clay marl subsoil retains water, releasing it to the vine roots during drought years.
