Full-bodied and well-balanced with flavour to spare. 13.5% Wayne Stehbens and his team at Katnook are making something of a speciality of Merlot in Coonawarra. The region is already well known for its world class Cabernet, and as Bordeaux shows, where Cabernet thrives the chances are Merlot might do pretty well too. Ripe and rounded with fabulous depth of fruit and wonderfully smooth tannins this is a big, characterful wine that really shows Oz's potential for world class Merlot. A bit about Katnook Estate Although the present company was only founded in 1967, the Katnook area (a local Aboriginal word meaning 'fat land') had been well known for grape growing since the mid-19th Century, when John Riddoch planted the first Coonawarra vines. In 1980, the arrival of winemaker Wayne Stehbens heralded a new era for Katnook when they began to bottle their own wines for the first time. Since then the company's reputation has rocketed with the wines now recognised as being among the very best in the region.
