Charles Melton NINE POPES Barossa Valley South Australia
The Nine Popes is a blend based on the three major southern Rhone varieties; Grenache, Shiraz & Mourvedre . Whilst the Nine Popes was initially modelled on Chateauneuf-du-Pape, it has evolved into an internationally recognised example of this style in its own right. Grenache perfume and Shiraz spice combine to produce a complex style that will take on lovely gamey and sweet spice characters with age. The intensity of flavours on the palate, which is the hallmark of Nine Popes, comes from the extraordinarily low yields of our Grenache -¾ to 1½ tonnes per acre. With patience Nine Popes will evolve into a rich, smooth style of great longevity. (6 x 1.5 Litres)
Charles Melton NINE POPES Barossa Valley South Australia
The Barossa Valley Nine Popes is a blend of 54% Grenache, 44% Shiraz and 2% Mourvedre. It is deep coloured, with wonderful musky Grenache and just a touch of spicy, leathery Shiraz perfumes on the nose. A relatively cool vintage, with milder, wetter weather before harvest, this has resulted in a more perfumed, elegant wine than the drought year of 2003. It has a long length, with spicy blackberry perfumes on the finish. This was an excellent vintage for the Grenache in this blend and its quality shines through. Charles Melton Wines has produced premium Barossa red wines since 1984. Charlie and a small band of Barossa winemakers turned their winemaking efforts to what were then considered a couple of unfashionable varieties: Shiraz and Grenache. These wines were initially styled on those from the Rhône but are now considered leading examples of the varieties in their own right. Probably one of the only wine titles to grow out of linguistic incompetence, the origin of ‘Nine Popes’ is an interesting one! Once Charlie had settled on a Rhone blend, he decided to name the wine after the world's most famous wine from the southern Rhone, Châteauneuf du Pape. The problem was that his French skills were somewhat sketchy and he thought that Châteauneuf du Pape meant home of the ‘Nine’ popes. This wine is sealed under Stelvin closure to ensure it reaches you in perfect condition. (6 x 75 cl)
Charles Melton ROSE OF VIRGINIA Barossa Valley South Australia
The Charles Melton Rose of Virginia is a blend of 50% Grenache, 43% Cabernet Sauvignon with a dash of Pinot Meunier and Shiraz. A vivid fuschia in colour from 1 to 3 days skin contact, it has lovely aromatic Grenache perfumes on the nose, which are given a touch of spice by the Shiraz and Cabernet. The tiny proportion of Pinot Meunier adds further interest. On the palate the wine is well-balanced, with good mid-palate richness and the surprising weight and trademark tannins of the Rose of Virginia. Charles Melton Wines has produced premium Barossa red wines since 1984. Charlie and a small band of Barossa winemakers turned their winemaking efforts to what were then considered a couple of unfashionable varieties: Shiraz and Grenache. These wines were initially styled on those from the Rhone but are now considered leading examples of the varieties in their own right. The wines have always attracted national and international recognition, and an enduring commitment to dry farmed vineyards and careful crafting of the wine will ensure that this continues. (12 x 75 cl)
Charles Melton NINE POPES Grenache Barossa Valley Australia
Since the first vintage of Charles Melton Wines in 1984, this small Barossa Valley winery has gained both national and international recognition for its premium red table wines. A Barossa take on Chateauneuf and now a classic in its own right. Bramble and spice on the nose, savoury meaty characters on the palate and some toasty oak. (12 x 75 cl)
