Description:
This is complex cool climate Shiraz rather than Barossa Blockbuster. And very fine it is too. The emphasis is on spice and ripe red fruit with a very good acid balance. Despite the immediate attraction of this wine there is enough in reserve for long ageing.
Frankland Estate ISOLATION RIDGE Riesling Frankland Western Australia from Australia, Western Australia, Frankland by Frankland Estate Frankland WA (12 x 75 cl)
Fruit for this wine was sourced from three locations in the Isolation vineyards.Early experiments with normal yields and lots of new oak were soon abandoned. This is made from the Mendoza clone, yielding 1.5 tons/acre with 30% new oak. A highly selective approach to this wine has produced an opulent Chardonnay from difficult vintage conditions. Exuberant chardonnay flavours across a complex register with a rich, dry finish. (12 x 75 cl)
The creation of Barrie Smith and Judi Cullum , now assisted by their children Elizabeth, Hunter and Trilby. They pioneered the Frankland district of the Great Southern region of Western Australia, planting their first vines on Isolation Ridge in 1988 and making their wine themselves from 1993. Now they are established as leading producers of Riesling, Chardonnay, Shiraz and a Bordeaux blend. The wines are pure, complex, balanced and ageworthy. (12 x 75 cl)

Named for Dr Harold Olmo, the viticultural expert who first identified the potential of the Frankland region. The vineyard is planted 40% merlot, 40% cabernet franc and the balance with cabernet sauvignon, malbec and petit verdot for a full house. The 1998 vintage produced a powerful, rich highly concentrated wine, which is stylish and approachable now, but will develop gracefully. (12 x 75 cl)
