Penny's Hill is a relatively new McLaren Vale wine, its first wines being produced from the 1995 vintage. Recognised by its distinctive 'red dot' packaging, the Penny's Hill range is made by winemaker Ben Riggs. He who uses only estate-grown fruit from the company's McLaren Vale vineyards - Penny's Hill, Goss Corner and Malpas Road - which are managed by local viticulturist, David Paxton.
Penny's Hill is housed at 'Ingleburne' which was originally owned by Thomas Overton who farmed the land and established a Dernier school on the property in 1848. 'Ingleburne' remained in the hands of the Goss and Rowland families until it was bought in 1998 by Susie and Tony Parkinson, the present owners, as the new base for their Penny's Hill label.
Vines in all Penny's Hill vineyards are hand tended and maintained, including hand pruning, intricate tasks managed with aplomb by our viticultural overseer, Toby Bekkers from Paxton Vineyards. This has produced wines that reflect the terrior and great skill of the winemaker.
Sourced from two key regions of South Australia's Fleurieu, the Red Dot Shiraz represents a venture out from beyond Penny's Hill own vineyards of McLaren Vale. Grapes have been sourced from vineyards in both McLaren Vale and Langhorne Creek, and blended to enhance the best characters from both regions.
This Vintage in McLaren Vale is regarded as very good, and has produced rich, ripe and juicy wines. Enjoying a distinctly Mediterranean climate (warm summers, cool winters, winter dominant rainfall), McLaren Vale is consistent in its ability to produce fine, ripe styles of Shiraz, year in and year out.
Located about an hour south east of McLaren Vale, Langhorne Creek, where the rest of the grapes are sourced from, is an old, established wine - growing region on the floodplains of the Bremer and Angus River. The region still benefits from winter flooding from the Bremer, helping combat the relatively low average rainfall of approximately 380mm per annum. Cooling breezes from Lake Alexandrina moderate summer temperatures, making for a cool, even growing season.
Matured for 12 months in a combination of French and American oak, Winemaker Ben Riggs used words such as 'sweet, soft, juicy' and 'fruit driven' when describing this wine. He considered 'This is a delicious combination of the rich ripe, juicy, soft and sweet Shiraz characteristics of McLaren Vale, and spicy, flavoursome and elegant ones of Langhorne Creek.'
