Tasting Note A very well balanced Rioja with black and red berry fruit, darker brambly notes and spicy, creamy vanilla oak. Soft, generous and bright with some secondary savoury, leathery notes coming through from the long months spent in barrel. Producer Profile Bodegas Criadores de Rioja typifies twenty-first century Rioja in its careful balancing of tradition and innovation. The winery was established in 2000 with a view to modernising the production of Rioja wines whilst working with the scores of small, local growers to make wines that reflect the quality and history of Rioja. Under the careful eye of young winemaker Paloma Redondo, the all-singing, all-dancing winery is a palace of stainless steel – with oak barrels being used sparingly – but the wines themselves are true to the region, and eschew the vogue for an ‘international style’. Garnet colour with purple glints, the wine has a nose of black cherries. With good intensity and smooth complexity with aromas of ripe red-berries, spices and vanilla, the palate of ripe fruit is soft and creamy with just enough tannin. Long finish in which the ripe fruit dominates. (12 x 75 cl)

Bodegas Alicia Rojas has a long and rich history that begins in 1920. In his first traditional cellar in Laguardia, Mr Gonzalo Rojas began making wines from the indigenous grape Tempranillo and soon began ageing them in oak, something he had learnt from a trip to Bordeaux. His wines were soon held in high esteem and this, along with his commitment to the growth of the wine business in Rioja, soon saw him appointed to the Administrative Council Today the Rojas family wines are still highly rated and they produce both ordinary Tinto and Crianza as well as an organic version of both under the Solarce label.
