Description:
Trentham Estate was once part of a large sheep station called Trentham Cliffs'. After the Second World War the riverfront areas - bordering the Murray River - were developed into horticultural properties.
The Murphy family were pioneers who established vineyards at Merbein in 1909 and they moved to the present property in 1960 where Jack Murphy instilled his knowledge of viticulture to the family, who established Trentham Estate. The vineyard flourished in the rich red loam over limestone soils, nurtured by water from the magnificent Murray River and Trentham Estate was officially launched in 1988.
The Estate is continually striving to achieve the best possible fruit, involving use of many different varieties, with many different clones. Today, the Murphy vineyards spread over 50 hectares and have an annual crush of approximately 1,200 tonnes, however, only selected grapes are used to produce the estate's own range of wines.
Vineyard Manager and Owner Pat Murphy, has over 30 years experience in Viticulture, and this definitely shows in the Trentham award winning wines. Known for their full flavour, structure and varietal character, it certainly proves that 'Good wines are made in the Vineyard'. However the modern state of the art facilities allow the flexibility to perform different winemaking styles, resulting in the diverse and always consistent Trentham Estate wines.
An excellent 'older' grape variety from Bordeaux in France, where the dark thick skins produce deeply coloured, spicy and fragrant wines. It is an ideal variety for warmer regions due to its late ripening, good acid and sugar balance.
The 2003 season produced the third Trentham Estate vintage and was harvested on the 9th March. This harvest date was unusually early due to the very light crop, but produced grapes that were beautifully coloured and in excellent condition.
Following traditional winemaking techniques, the grapes were crushed, fermented on skins for 10 days to extract colour and flavour, before pressing and transferring to French oak barrels. The wine was then matured for 13 months before final blending and bottling.
This Trentham 2003 Petit Verdot is the third release and shows dark vibrant red purple colour with fragrant berry fruits. The palate is spicy, rich, soft and full with fine firm tannins on the finish and is an excellent example of this great variety.
Petit Verdot is recognised as a great ageing wine and this release should cellar well over the next 6-8 years.
