| Description: |
 |
Very intense, deep ruby red, with the purple reflections typical of young Dolcetto; the bouquet surprises with exceptional elegance and ideal interplay of Nebbiolo and Dolcetto (the former's finesse, the latter's volume): a chorus where Nebbiolo gives the peak performance and Dolcetto the background. Spicy and/or vinous notes characteristic of the two varieties, mellowed by aging. Very rich but non-aggressive, an all-around food wine for special occasions and complex, structured dishes. Blends famously include some of the world's most prestigious wines: our Bricco may well be the most historic and authentically Italian interpretation. Serve at 17/19º C., in an ample glass. Bricco del Drago was first released in 1969 and was the first ''Super Vino da Tavola'' in the Piedmont, possibly the first in Italy. Thanks to this long-standing reputation, Bricco del Drago may soon be recognized as an individual, specific DOC, ''Bricco del Drago''. Since 1995 vintage it is a Langhe Rosso DOC. The reason behind this wine is the incredible complexity and structure with which this soil (in combination with the low crops per vine)endows Dolcetto, rendering it far from the forward wine it usually is. This particular Dolcetto, with the addition of a small percentage of Nebbiolo bestowing greater finesse and elegance, and after a judiciously timed sojourn in wood, is a complex, pleasing wine of superb breed and extraordinary longevity. Beacause of these distinguishing traits, Dr. Degiacomi, who created the wine, wisely choose to employ cru name rather than varietal name to identify it. IN THE VINEYARD Varieties (in approximate percentages) : 85% Dolcetto - 15% Nebbiolo Exposure : westerly Altitude : between 330 ad 400 meters above sea level Age of vines : an average 20 years approximately, with vines planted between 1970 and 1989. In 2000 a new vineyard has been planted with Nebbiolo and Dolcetto Vines per hectare : around 5,000 Wine yield per hectare : about 4,000 liters Harvest time : September 20th-30th for Dolcetto, October 1st-10th for Nebbiolo IN THE WINERY The two varieties are vinified separately, as maturation takes place at different times: the two wines are assembled and then undergo élevage in oak. Maceration is approximately 5/8 days for Dolcetto and about 10/12 days for Nebbiolo, at a maximum temperature of respectively 25º C. and 30º C. The sojourn in oak barrels - Slavonian and French, partly renewed each year - lasts 12 to 18 months, depending on vintage. The wine is successively racked into stainless steel, clarified with fresh, whipped egg white, decanted and bottled without filtering. Alcohol: 12.5-13 % by vol. Total acidity: 5-5.5 grams per liter of tartaric acid Dry extract: 27-29 grams per liter
