The result is the famous Clos d'Yvigne Saussignac, a wine that brings a golden splendour to the eye, an orchard of luscious fruits to the nose and a casket of sweets to the mouth: honey, apricots, vanilla, quince, oranges, butterscotch and a hint of liquorice. The intense sweetness is well balanced by the touches of natural acidity. An elegant, exceptional wine that will age well.
Organic. Robert Parker of The Wine Advocate quotes Chateau Richard as one of Bergerac's star estates. This top dessert wine oozes class, gloriously opulent and honeyed, intensely full-bodied yet well-balanced. Made from 90% Semillon and 10% Muscadelle drink or keep for 10 to 15 years. (12 x 50 cl)
Made from botrytised Semillon grapes, like Sauternes, by Pierre Sadoux, this wine has all the qualities to accompany an excellent dessert. Rich, only slightly oaky, with aromas of honey, acacia and vanilla. (6 x 75 cl)
Organic. This scintillatingly brilliant, top dessert wine from the Richard estate has been linked to a hypothetical mix of Chateau Climens and Chateau d'Yquem! Justified praise, as this is one of the finest dessert wines you will try. Aged in new oak for fifteen months, it is rich and intense with fantastic honey and nut sweetness, balanced by a wonderful, crisp, clean cutting acidity. This will convert anyone who thinks they don't like sweet wine! "Great combo of the nerviness of botrytis, the luxury of new oak and the ripeness of pears in honey". Jancis Robinson, Financial Times. (12 x 50 cl)
Chateau Billot's 40 Hectare plot is situated in Monestier, South-west Bergerac. This Semillon Botrytis-Affected dessert wine from Saussignac has in a short time become the standard-bearer for this tiny appellation next to Monbazillac. Available in 50 cl Bottles. (6 x 50 cl)
This Saussignac is sourced from the oldest vines on the estate and utilises botrytis in a portion of the selected parcels, with up to 4 'tries' or passes of the pickers in order to hand select the appropriate grapes from each bunch. The vineyard is planted on clay and calcareous hillsides and provides an average yield of 15 hectolitres per hectare, harvesting is always by hand. The wine is then matured in barrique for 12-18 months. The cepage for the 2001 vintage is 60% Semillon, 25% Muscadelle and 15% Sauvignon Blanc, and the wine has a rich and honeyed nose with floral and slight apricot aromas. The same dedicated intensity of apricots and honey can be found on the palate, which boasts a sensual, silky texture and very fine balance. Finishes with a distinguished, citrussy fresh length. There are only between 2000 and 4000 bottles made every year, entirely dependant upon the vintage and is available only in limited quantities. Available in 50 cl Bottles. (6 x 50 cl)
Pierre Sadoux make his Saussignac from an assemblage of Semillon, Sauvignon, Muscadelle, Ondec and Chenin Blanc. It is a rich, full wine whose aroma of acacia, peach and honeysuckle develops over time into a generous, complex bouquet. The harvest of partially raisined, or dried and shriveled, grapes gives this wine its sweetness. (6 x 75 cl)
