Description: Goldwater Estate was established by Kim and Jeanette Goldwater in 1978 when they pioneered winegrowing on Waiheke Island with the planting of the Island's first vinifera vineyard. The success of their wines is demonstrated by the fact that there are now more than thirty vineyards on Waiheke Island.

The Goldwater philosophy is simple - great wine is born in the vineyard. Therefore, careful site selection, sustainable viticultural practices and meticulous vineyard management, including innovative trellising and low yields, ensure the production of exceptionally high quality grapes.

The Estate owned Waiheke Island vineyards extend over 35 acres of free-draining clay based hillside soils and are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Chardonnay.

Goldwater Estate has been an initial participant in the Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand Scheme. This scheme has been widely adopted throughout the country to provide a 'best practice' model of environmental practices in the vineyard and winery.

Through these practices Goldwater's objective is to address its own, and consumer, concerns in matters pertaining to the environment and winegrape production. It also aims to improve vineyard management and wine quality through these sustainable practices.

This wine is made from grapes grown in the Goldwater Estate Waiheke Island Esslin vineyard which was established from specially selected clones of Merlot privately imported from France. The grapes are hand picked, crushed, destemmed and fermented in stainless steel after a short cold maceration, then aged in seasoned French oak for 15 months.

A beautiful crimson coloured wine with a bouquet of plums, spice and leather with a little cedary oak. On the palate this Merlot is intense with masses of plum, cassis, spice, liquorice and some gamey flavours. The spicy oak and rich, juicy, sweet fruit make this is a big chunky wine with great complexity and length. Supple and generous, with enough concentration and tannin structure this great wine will age gracefully for a number of years.
