Description:
Goats really do roam on the Fairview estate but the pun is more to do with the Rhone varietals like Shiraz and Grenache which Charles Back (Fairview wines) has planted and which suit the hot South African sun.
Concentrated, spicy wine with lots of body and flavourthis is a deep vibrant purple coloured wine with aromas of ripe fruit and spice. Showing juicy ripe fruit this wine is complemented by the fresh palate with firm tannins and good length.
The grapes were harvested from vineyards in the Paarl, Perdeberg, Piekenierskloof and Malmesbury regions. The majority of grapes are sourced from dry farmed old bush vines. These vineyards provide low yields, resulting in wine with considerable concentration.
The various, predominantly Rhone varietals were harvested ripe and destalked before being fermented at 25 - 28°C. These include Shiraz, Pinotage, Cinsaut, Grenache and Gamay Noir. A small amount of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon are also included, providing added structure. The wine was very lightly oaked before being carefully blended and bottled.
So the story goes.... One afternoon, at harvest time, the mischievous son of Charles Back, Jason and his friend Justin let the goats out of their tower and sent them for a walkabout amongst the vines. As in the legend of the Yemeni goat herder - whose roaming flock first discovered the joys of coffee beans, the goats picked out the best and tastiest fruit - their choice serves as our inspiration for this wine.
