La Braccesca SANTA PIA Vino Nobile di Montepulciano
Antinori are the owners of the La Braccesca estate and have lived in Florence since the early 13th century when they moved from Calenzano, a small town between Florence and Prato, where their presence was recorded back in 1188. Wine is part of the family history and as early as 1385 Giovanni di Piero Antinori registered with the Guild of Winemakers. The La Braccesca Estate is approximately 342 ha and is divided into two main blocks: the historical part of the estate is situated in the Montepulciano area and covers 78 ha of vineyards; the other covers 165 ha of vineyards, and is situated at the foot of the hills around Cortona. This wine is made from a 15 hectare vineyard at Santa Pia, one of the best-known areas for Vino Nobile di Montepulciano production. The vineyard is planted with Prugnolo Gentile , carefully selected over the years to obtain a cru that best expresses the personality of this area. The grapes from the vineyard 'Santa Pia' in the Montepulciano district were destemmed and crushed and maceration took place over a period of 20 days during which time the wine also completed its alcoholic fermentation at a temperature not exceeding 30ÂșC. The wine was then racked and completed its malolactic fermentation in French and Hungarian barrique. After this the wine was aged for a period of 15 months in barrique, during this time the wine was racked several times. 'Santa Pia' was then bottled and further aged for 12 months before release. Using the Sangiovese clone Prugnolo Gentile this is a deep red coloured wine with aromas of red fruit and hints of vanilla. On the palate it is rich with an excellent structure and tannins well balanced and soft culminating in an enjoyable finish. (6 x 75 cl)

Avignonesi Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG
The Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, a blend of 80% Sangiovese, 15% Canaiolo and 5% Mammolo combines purity of fruit with great elegance. The wine is garnet in colour, its nose intense yet elegant and the palate rich yet tight and sinewy. Avignonesi is one of the great names in Italian wine. The Falvo brothers, who owned vineyards in the district of Cortona, took over Avignonesi in 1974 and invested heavily in the estate. They used indigenous grapes and also introduced international varieties alongside native grape varieties. Today, Avignonesi has 115 hectares of vineyard split between four estates. Two of the estates, Le Capezzine and I Poggetti, are situated in the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano zone, while the other two, La Selva and La Lombarda, are located further to the east in the Cortona D.O.C. zone. Grapes for the Vino Nobile are sourced from La Stella vineyard on the Le Capezzine estate, as well as three vineyards on the I Poggetti estate. The use of alberello bush or goblet training ensures earlier ripening, something which in turn has given fuller, riper wines than Montepulciano was previously capable of producing. (12 x 75 cl)

Valdipiatta Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva DOCG
A well deserved silver medal for the 1995 Riserva, for this is a wine that has to be a must for all wine lovers, but still needs time to develop. A wine to buy, one of those few remaining cases and try a bottle a year to see how it develops! The 1994 has developed quicker and is thus more ready to be drunk. (12 x 75 cl)
