This estate developed out of the Domaine de Calon, where wine was probably made as early as the 13th century. The present chateau was made at the end of the 16th century on the site of a fort. The most famous owner of this estate was Marquis Alexandre de Segur, the 18th century president on the Bordeaux parliament. He owned Lafite, Latour and Mouton but he preferred Calon. 'I make wine at Lafite and Latour but my heart is at Calon.' A heart still appears on the Chateau Calon-Segur label. In good vintages, the true Saint Estephe mark of a classic, concentrated wine comes through. It possesses spicy fruit, woodland scents, well-integrated tannins and considerable oak. 22 months: 40% in new barrels. Parker 92. (12 x 75 cl)
