Description:
The Poggio Valente, Le Pupille’s outstanding single vineyard Morellino, is made from Sangiovese and a small quantity of Alicante. It has superb perfume, depth and flesh. This estate, long one of our favourite producers in Scansano, has now joined the ranks of the Tuscan superstars. With the release of each vintage, the sense of excitement surrounding the wines is almost as tangible as the opulent fruit that characterises each of Le Pupille’s impressive reds.
Scansano is a fruity, velvety and perfumed red wine. The very first vintage was 1985 and since then, Morellino has continued to accompany the estate as the complete and constant expression of the terroir. Elisabetta Geppetti has injected a great deal of dynamism into Le Pupille's wines in the past few vintages, yet has been careful to look after the detail as well. This is illustrated by the quality and consistency of this Morellino. This estate, long one of our favourite producers in Scansano, has now joined the ranks of the Tuscan superstars. The Morellino di Scansano is a blend of 85% Sangiovese and 15% Alicante and Malvasia Nera. It has delicious ripe fruit on the nose, with the cherry-strawberry hints characteristic of ripe Sangiovese. The Alicante adds greater depth of colour to the blend whereas the Malvasia Nera emphasises the perfume of this ripe, approachable wine. Gianpaolo Paglia, an agronomist born and bred in Maremma, and Justine Keeling, an English marketing manager, bought the estate in 1997. They started making Morellino di Scansano , with the existing 6 Ha of old and high quality producing vineyards, whilst at the same time planting new vineyards using local varieties such as Sangiovese and Alicante. Additionally, they also built an modern winery and warehousing in 2002. Poggio Argentiera has emerged as one of Scansano's best wineries and it is today composed of two estates situated in two different areas of Tuscany's Maremma, near the town of Grosseto. At Podere Adua there is the head office, cellar as well as the winery and it is close to the Maremma Natural Park, in the coastal region of Grosseto. The second estate, Podere Keeling, is found in the hilly area to the North of the Scansano district, towards Monte Amiata. Made from a blend of Sangiovese 85%, Ciliegiolo 10% and Alicante 5% showing the cherry fruit, so typical of Maremma's Sangiovese. An up- front style that is fresh and crisp, with a solid structure and body that act as the final touches for a wine that is exactly as one would expect from the best expression of Maremma's terroir. The Sangiovese dominated wine was fermented completely in small, open French oak barrels aged more than three years. Malolactic fermentation and maturation in first, second and third use barrels , was aged between 12-13 months before release. he wine, enriched by a small percentage of traditional Alicante grapes , demonstrates all the characteristics of the terroir: smooth, elegant and concentrated, and with an additional touch of style and solid structure. A real Maremma Thoroughbred. (6 x 75 cl)
