Robertson Winery ASHTON VINEYARD Sauvignon Blanc RSA
2004 was a slightly unusual harvest, with irregular weather patterns influencing ripening dramatically though overall quality was not adversely affected and volumes were slightly up on average. The preceding winter was cold enough for the vines to rest, but late rains and the ensuing weather conditions resulted in the whole harvest starting 2 weeks late. The unseasonal humid weather and thunder showers in January caused some problems in the early ripening varieties and the heat waves played havoc with sugar levels which meant the grapes were harvested even later than projected. However, 2004 will be remembered as a great vintage for red wines with good colour, great depth and an excellent fruit-acid balance, and whites with upfront fruit and a crisp acidity. Our Sauvignon Blanc vines are planted in deep cool alluvial soils on the riverbanks with a row direction from North West to South East to utilize the prevailing sea breeze. The sea breeze cools down the fruit, extends the ripening period and builds up concentrated flavours in the grapes. The Fruit was harvested very early in the morning from the last week of February to the middle of March from 43 specially selected grape growers in the Robertson Valley. Gentle pressing followed by using a pneumatic bag press to capture the delicate fruit component. The wine was made reductively to prevent any oxidation and to ensure that natural flavours of the grapes could be retained. Fermentation happened slowly in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks for 18 days at 12ºC. Full-bodied wine with powerful varietal flavours of pineapple, granadilla, melon and green apple. Good structure with lovely balancing acidity. (12 x 75 cl)
Robertson Winery ASHTON VINEYARD Pinotage Ruby Cabernet RSA
For the first time in many years the Robertson region experienced good rains and cold temperatures during the winter. It was good in that it helped to build up a little ground water, as it was not necessary to irrigate the vines during the winter months. Spring arrived at the beginning of September; overall bud break was very good due to the cold conditions of winter. Night temperatures in October and November were significantly cooler compared to the previous year. This ensured good acidities. This true South African variety, developed in 1925, is a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsaut. Fruit was harvested in the first week of February from 43 specially selected grape growers in the Robertson Valley. Pinotage by nature is a heavy bearer therefore the majority of our vines are planted in sandy soils and irrigation is restricted to limit excessive growth. The harvest started on 28 January 2003. Attention to detail was well managed and has resulted in good potential in the quality of the wines. Grapes were harvested at full ripeness between 23,5º (12 x 75 cl)

For the first time in many years there were good rains and cold temperatures during winter in Robertson. The Chardonnay vines are planted higher up against the mountains on gravelly Karoo soils with some clay and lime fractions. The high lime content in the soil ensures a healthy well drained growing medium for our vines. Chardonnay traditionally buds irregularly, therefore pruning only happens at the end of July to ensure even budding. Our harvest started on 28 January 2003. Attention to detail was well managed and has resulted in good potential in the quality of our wines. The Chardonnay grapes were the first grapes harvested in 2003 and were brought to the cellar in the first week of February. Grapes were harvested at a very ripe stage between 23,5º (12 x 75 cl)
