The Franciscan monks were drawn to the site of this vineyard by the ancient spring of the 'Fonte da Vida' famous for it's healing powers since 1493. Through the ages there has been great change and the Quinta do Convento da Franqueira was built in the 1560's using stones taken from the nearby ruined castle of Faria, stronghold in the 14th century of Nuno Goncalves, a portuguese hero. More recently in 1965 it was bought by an englishman, Brian Gallie who set about with enthusiasm to restore the, by then, dilapidated building. A talented draughtsman, he left such detailed drawings that today his son Piers is continuing the work that has turned Franqueira into a haven of timeless peace and subtle beauty. Today, the six hectare vineyard and modern winery produces the refreshing vinho verde 'Quinta da Franqueira' and Piers Gallie is always pleased to show guests round and explain how the wine is made. He uses the Trajadura and Loureiro grapes to produce a light, soft floral wine showing fresh green apple. (12 x 75 cl)

Produced at Quinta da Aguieira, well known in the past for its award-winning wines, this wine is aged in French oak barrels. It is a very persistent and fruity wine with an attractive garnet colour. It presents currant and black cherry flavours, smooth vanilla and oak taste. Ideal with meat dishes or some fish dishes. It can also be served as an appetizer with cheese and nuts. (6 x 75 cl)

Quinta da Touriga Cha Douro Superior Portugal from Portugal, Douro, Douro Superior by Quinta da Touriga Cha (12 x 75 cl)

A blend of Touriga, Tinta Roriz, Castelao and Alicante Bouchet. Foot trodden in lagares, part fermentation in lagares, part in small French oak vats. Aged 14 months in French oak barriques. This is fresh and vibrantly fruited with an easy drinking style. (6 x 75 cl)

Organic. Sturdy, slightly spicy wine from the valley of the river Torto, made from local Touriga Francesa and Tinta Roriz grapes. A well structured, chunky wine with hints of figs and raisins. 'Turns in a richly fruity, fresh-faced performance on the tast (12 x 75 cl)

Made exclusively from Chardonnay, this estate bottled wine is fermented in French oak barrels to add depth and complexity. Its fresh and fruit tropical notes lead to spicy flavours and hints of vanilla on the finish. (6 x 75 cl)

A blend of Tinta Roriz, Touriga Nacional and Alicante Bouschet. Clay- calcareous soil . The grapes were foot trodden in stone lagares. Fermentation took place in lagares and in small vats of French oak Allier with successive pressings by foot. Aged in new French oak barrels for 15 months.. Fragrant, leafy black fruit carries through to fine, vibrant palate, complemented by layers of dark chocolate, tobacco,spice and fresh herbs. True Touriga Nacional character. (6 x 75 cl)
