After the Second World War the riverfront areas - bordering the Murray River - were developed into horticultural properties. The Murphy family were pioneers who established vineyards at Merbein in 1909. They moved to the property in 1960 and Trentham Estate was officially launched in 1988, although the first harvest was in 1984, using only 6 tonnes of grapes. The Murphy vineyards now spread over 50 hectares, with an annual crush of approximately 1,200 tonnes to produce the estate's own range from a selected 400 tonnes. Anthony Murphy, the winemaker, left Mildara Blass after an eleven-year association to concentrate on the Estate wines, along with his brother, Patrick, who is vineyard manager. Trentham produce wines which are outstanding value for money.
