The term "recioto" probably comes from the dialect word "recia" which means the upper and outer parts of the bunches of grapes. These "recie" are the grapes which are ripest and which enjoy the best exposure to the sun. The word "recia" may be derived from the Latin word "racemus" which means bunch. Our opinion is that the word comes from the Latin "recisus" that means a bunch cutted and let down to dry. Recioto is the standard - bearer of Veronese wines. Normally more sweet than semi-dry, in some cases Recioto is made using a technique which reduces the residual sugar but does not completely ferment the Recioto into an Amarone. This wine, called "Amandorlato", is a true rarity, produced in small quantity for friends and connoisseurs seeking unique wines. The vineyard in Vaio Mezzanella produces grapes which are particularly adapted for producing Recioto Amandolato. The vineyard position together with its exposure and soil produces a Recioto part known for its complexity and structure more than for its sweet characteristic. It was not difficult for the Masi Technical Group, knowing the nature of the vineyard, to produce a Recioto Amandolato. A wine with characteristic perfume of mature fruit, and a flavour decisive but delicate.
DESCRIPTION OF THE WINE Campolongo di Torbe is the most elegant of Masi’s Amarone crus. It is characterized by a rounded almondy flavour and by great intensity and balance. The choice of this vineyard is based not only on many years of technical experimentation at the Masi winery, but also on a very important historical document that indicates Mazzano and Torbe vineyards as the best in the valley for the production of this high-quality wine. In fact, with a contract dated 1194 , the monks of San Zeno Monastery, landowners of the entire Negrar Valley, leased the land to a certain Musio di Panego for a period of 29 years. The rent had to be paid with a certain quantity of grapes produced in the best area of the fiefdom, indicated as the Mazzano vineyards. If the vineyards yielded a poor crop because of hail, or other reasons, grapes had to be harvested at Capavo. This denomination is no longer in use but it corresponds to the upper hillside area of Torbe, where the vineyards of Campolongo di Torbe are now located. (6 x 75 cl)
The name Recioto comes from the local dialect word recia meaning the upper ears or twigs of the grape bunch where it is supposed the grapes are riper and healthier than those at the centre of the bunch. The Recioto di Soave is a dessert wine of rare quality, golden yellow in colour and with an intense and fruity bouquet. Few are the wine producers who willingly venture into making this wine whose perfection is provided by the coming together of a series of circumstances which must be synchronised one with another. Variations in climate, the soil, the progression of the season, good drying of the grapes and the unpredictable process of winter fermentation all limit production to the best years. The grapes were harvested in September. A dessert wine which is drunk at between 12ºC and 14ºC. (6 x 37.5 cl)
