For the first time in many years the Robertson region experienced good rains and cold temperatures during the winter. It was good in that it helped to build up a little ground water, as it was not necessary to irrigate the vines during the winter months. Spring arrived at the beginning of September; overall bud break was very good due to the cold conditions of winter. Night temperatures in October and November were significantly cooler compared to the previous year. This ensured good acidities. This true South African variety, developed in 1925, is a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsaut. Fruit was harvested in the first week of February from 43 specially selected grape growers in the Robertson Valley. Pinotage by nature is a heavy bearer therefore the majority of our vines are planted in sandy soils and irrigation is restricted to limit excessive growth. The harvest started on 28 January 2003. Attention to detail was well managed and has resulted in good potential in the quality of the wines. Grapes were harvested at full ripeness between 23,5º - 26,5º from a selection of vineyards. Fermentation happened in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks at 25ºC for 4 days. Forty percent of the wine was matured on French oak for 5 months to add weight and complexity. A deep purple tint on the rim with delicious flavours of ripe strawberry, banana, juicy plums and rich red cherry. Produced in an early drinking style with well-integrated wood and a soft smooth finish.

Some of the consignment came back and it was noticed that the bottles had developed exceedingly well. D'Estournel decided all of his wine would make a sea journey and to emphasise his connections with the Far East he built a chateau in the style of an Oriental temple, complete with Pagoda towers. The success of these wines is due to the expert management of Bruno Prats who has invested on a large scale and has made many fundamental improvements. The vigorous taste holds nuances of ripe fruit, plus chocolate, coffee and spices. Gravel ridges, mixed with sand, clay and a limestone subsoil. 50-100% of virgin barriques new oak. The Royal Tokaji Wine Company was established in 1989 and the 1st vintage was produced in 1990. Over 50% of the company's vineyards are classified as 1st or 2nd Growths and production is limited to wines with 4 puttonyos and above. It pioneered the production of single vineyard wines and its major role in Tokaji`s renaissance is now widely recognised. The Royal Tokaji Wine Co Essencia 1993 vintage is a deep burnished gold colour, remarkably full bodied and luxuriously sweet showing excellent balance and structure. Tempting kumquat, orange and caramel are evident with generous hints of white chocolate and toasted bread. Fresh and long the wine is drinking very nicely now and should cellar well until 2012.
