David Powell discovered some land in 1992 that had old Shiraz vines growing on it that were almost dead. After nursing them back to health he secured a contract to supply the grapes to a local grower. After realising that this hobby could be made into a business he decided to go full time. In 1994 he founded the company and named it Torbreck after a forrest in Scotland where he had worked as a lumberjack. The Struie sources fruit from the high altitudes of Eden Valley imparting delicate spice, white pepper and fruit characters. While the Barossa component displays a richer, deeper, more brooding flavour and intensity. The combined structure will reward extended cellaring.A 'modern classic' 'The view from the Struie down across the Dornoch Firth is as inspiring as that of the Valley floor from the Barossa Ranges. This wine is a blend of Shiraz from the Eden and Barossa Valleys, combining the best of both regions'. Barossa Valley Estate was established in 1985 by a group of Barossa Valley grape growers who saw an opportunity to add value to their harvest. Since its inception, Barossa Valley Estate has gone from strength to strength. Today the portfolio of wines comprises E&E, Ebenezer and Moculta. Each of these ranges is unique and made to a particular style. Barossa Valley Estate really does have the 'Pick of Barossa', with fruit supplied from most sections of the Valley by about 80 loyal growers. This breadth of selection gives Barossa Valley Estate a unique advantage in that the winery can produce a wide selection of premium varieties which are 100 per cent Barossa. Vibrant deep red in colour, this wine has a complex aroma, bold red plum, black currant and chocolate characters with overtones of vanillin oak. WINEMAKERS' COMMENTS: COLOUR: Deep ruby red with purple hues. NOSE: Black currants, plums, cherries, with cinnamon, aniseed, all spice, leather and mocha, balanced beautifully by savoury vanillin oak. PALATE: Full bodied with concentrated flavours of black cherries, plums and blueberries. Fresh and vibrant with peppery spice and earthy characters. It exhibits a silky texture with fine savoury tannins and a persistent length.
Fruit for the Ebenezer range of wines are picked predominantly from 30 to 80 year old Barossa vines ensuring that the wines are rich and full bodied with intense varietal and regional character. When selecting the fruit Barossa Valley Estate look at all their vineyards and pick the best blocks from a variety of soil types to ensure complexity of fruit flavours. The Maturation process occurred in 50% new and 50% 1 to 2 year old American oak for 18 months. This Shiraz has a deep red colour with dark purple hues. The bouquet is showing lifted plum fruit with savoury smoked ham characters from oak maturation. The palate is sweet, with luscious fruit on the front, as well as dark plum and blackberry with subtle charry oak complexity on the back palate. A well balanced wine showing good harmony between fruit and oak. This wine can be cellared up to 10 years. (6 x 75 cl)
