The difficult vintage meant that Giovanni Manetti and Franco Bernabei made less Flaccianello and Vigna del Sorbo than usual, so much of this year’s Chianti Classico is in fact declassified Flaccianello. As a result, although a more forward and approachable wine than the 2004, it still has the characteristic intensity and elegance of the Fontodi range. Few properties in Tuscany are as immaculately tended, or produce such meticulously made wines, as Fontodi. The Manetti family has owned the estate since 1968 and has worked with winemaker Franco Bernabei since 1979. All the fermentation tanks are equipped for pneumatic punching down of the cap and the increase in colour, extraction and flavour of the resulting wines is remarkable.
