Description:
Chateau Haut-Bailly vineyard is on a single plot on the highest land in the commune of Leognan. The weather during the spring of 1998 was very wet followed by a hot, dry May. Mid flowering occurred on the 4th June, ten days ahead of normal. With Veraison, consistent with flowering, was quick and uniform allowing the harvest to strat on 23 September. However, the summer was very hot with no rain in July and August, although during early September the rain came once more. The Merlot was picked before the rain and the Cabernet Sauvignon remained healthy in spite of the rain. The Merlot was of a remarkable quality and produced a remarkable colour and richness of tannins. The wine has been put together with a lot of sophistication to produce a harmonious wine full of dense, ripe flavours of black fruits, superb tannins and a long fantastic finnish.
Haut-Bailly has 28 hectares of vineyards which are very well sited on high, gravelly ground just east of Léognan village. The wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon , Merlot and Cabernet Franc . It is matured in small oak barriques for 15 months and is bottled unfined and unfiltered. Haut-Bailly is renowned for its smoothness and silkiness but, since the mid 1990s, the wines have better depth of fruit as well as more grip, concentration and body. They are now amongst the top echelons of Pessac-Léognan wines. (12 x 75 cl)
Chateau Haut-Bailly vineyard is on a single plot on the highest land in the commune of Leognan. Picked and sorted by hand the 2001 harvest provided one of the smallest yields because the number of bunches per vine was reduced to 6. However, the harvest provided highly concentrated grapes, the Merlots are rich in colour, fruit and tannin, while the Cabernet Sauvignon gives the impression of consistency, elegance and richness, resulting in a vintage which should show character, vivacity and lusture. The wine has a dark ruby colour and black berry fruit dominate the aromas and palate. The tannin structure is medium bodied and a subtle finish is surprisingly fruity. Limited Availability.
