It is intense and powerful with much new oak in evidence. In the heart of Chateauneuf du Pape stands the 18th century Chateau de Vaudieu surrounded by its 70 hectares of vineyards planted on a mixture of galets, sandy marl and clay. Bought by the late Gabriel Meffre in 1955, the estate is now owned and run by his grandson - Laurent Brechet who took control of Vaudieu in 1990. Starting with a wholesale rebuilding of the cellars after the 1990 vintage, Laurent Brechet has dramatically improved the standing of Vaudieu in the hierarchy of the great Chateauneuf estates. Almost six hectares of Syrah vines sourced from the neighbouring Chateau Rayas have been planted. Yields are kept to 30 hl/ha with planting density of 4000 vines per hectare. All the vines are hand picked, with the picking taking place in the morning to ensure that all the grapes are in optimum condition.
