Firm tannins, good structure of rich fruit and spicy oak combine well in this traditional bordeaux blend with more Merlot in than the Chateau Calon Segur. (6 x 75 cl)
Aromas of dark forrest fruits including blackcurrant give way to hints of chocolate. This medium bodied red with plenty of Merlot in the blend is showing berry fruit flavours characterised as soft and smooth on the finish. (6 x 75 cl)
The powerful fleshy black fruits that fill out the nose come through on the palate. The fruit feels ripe but there is a herbal green edge ensuring freshness and brightness on the finish. Calon-Segur formed the heart of the old Calon estate which comprised most of the commune of Saint Estephe. At the end of the 17th century, Calon passed into the hands of the 'Prince of Vines', Nicolas de Segur, whose other holdings included Lafite and Latour. In fact, the heart on the label signifies the motto of Calon-Segur, said to come from Nicolas de Segur himself: 'I make wine at Lafite and Latour, but my heart is at Calon.' The estate has been divided over the centuries , and is currently owned by Philippe Capbern Gasqueton who lives at the chateau. (6 x 75 cl)
This estate developed out of the Domaine de Calon, where wine was probably made as early as the 13th century. The present chateau was made at the end of the 16th century on the site of a fort. The most famous owner of this estate was Marquis Alexandre de Segur, the 18th century president on the Bordeaux parliament. He owned Lafite, Latour and Mouton but he preferred Calon. 'I make wine at Lafite and Latour but my heart is at Calon.' A heart still appears on the Chateau Calon-Segur label. In good vintages, the true Saint Estephe mark of a classic, concentrated wine comes through. It possesses spicy fruit, woodland scents, well-integrated tannins and considerable oak. 22 months: 40% in new barrels. Parker 92+. (12 x 75 cl)
