Goats really do roam on the Fairview estate but the pun is more to do with the Rhone varietals like Shiraz and Grenache which Charles Back has planted and which suit the hot South African sun. Concentrated, spicy wine with lots of body and flavourthis is a deep vibrant purple coloured wine with aromas of ripe fruit and spice. Showing juicy ripe fruit this wine is complemented by the fresh palate with firm tannins and good length. The grapes were harvested from vineyards in the Paarl, Perdeberg, Piekenierskloof and Malmesbury regions. The majority of grapes are sourced from dry farmed old bush vines. These vineyards provide low yields, resulting in wine with considerable concentration. The various, predominantly Rhone varietals were harvested ripe and destalked before being fermented at 25 (12 x 75 cl)

This Sweet Red is a dessert wine made from a blend of Tinta Amarella grown on the Fairview farm near Darling, and Shiraz from Paarl. The wine is fortified with 5 year old brandy spirits and aged in used oak barrels for approximately 8 months, before bottling. The Sweet Red has great depth of vibrant red colour with perfumes of violets and black cherries on the nose. On the palate, it is rich and powerful, with flavours of Christmas cake and toasted walnuts combined with a savoury edge. It has a long and intense on the finish. (12 x 75 cl)

The wine has a deep red colour with a spiced plum fruit on the nose and is a blend of 43% Barbera, 25% Sangiovese, 14% Primitivo and 18% Nebbiolo. It has good depth with vibrant, rounded fruit on the palate and the characteristic tannin structure of both the Italian varieties and the Fairview wines. This wine was developed by Charles Back of Fairview as a tribute to the influence that the Italian farming community has had on agriculture in the Cape. In particular, this praise was to Michele Agostinelli, who helped Fairview develop their cheese business in the early 1980s. (12 x 75 cl)

There is very little Carignan grown in South Africa. Charles Back found these Carignan grapes while looking for old vine Pinotage. The yields of the vineyard was 6.29 tons per hectare, and the wine shows a lovely complexity and rich, ripe fruit. This vintage is a vibrant, deep, crimson red in colour, with a dark spicy nose, and with aromas of cloves, nutmeg and some liquorice. Also, touches of ripe black currents and black cherries are evident. It has a rich, medium body, with firm tannins and a long finish. (6 x 75 cl)
