Were the many sub-zones of Chianti Classico to drawn up in the French style classification, Panzano would be first in line for the Grand Cru category. Villa Cafaggio own 30ha of vineyard in the prime site of Panzano, the Conca D'Oro, where a combination of soil type, altitude and aspect, offer perfect growing conditions for the Sangiovese. Their status as one of Chiantis Blue Ribband estates and the rising star of the region rests largely with the dynamic winemaker Stefano Farkas' talent for clonal selection, replanting substantial portion of the vineyard with the fine Sangiovese clones while planting some carefully selected Cabernet Sauvignon along the way. Consultant Stefano Chiccioli has also brought innovations in the winery using micro-oxygenation during fermentation giving a round depth of fruit to balance the austerity typical of sangiovesie. Their wines have garnered such rave reviews in recent years that they are on strict allocation. A lovely, rich colour. There is an enticing character on the nose, which has high-toned notes, black fruits and black olive aromas. The palate is just lovely, medium-bodied, but with a full, rounded texture. There is a great combination of soft black fruits, deliciously chewy tannins and strong acidity. There's a sweet edge to the fruit, but overall this is structured and balanced. (12 x 75 cl)
