Description: Owner of Chateau Lafite Rothschild for five generations, the Rothschild family has been based in this Bordeaux vineyard since 1868. High values and the respect of traditional methods make them passionate about harmony and excellence. Their wines bear witness to that passion year after year and their skills have patiently enriched the wines through the generations, with world-renowned success.

Over the years, Domain Baron de Rothschild has expanded its offerings through the acquisition of several french Chateau's as well as ventures in Argentina. However, in 1992, Julio Bastos, owner of Quinta do Carmo called on Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) in order to renovate the property. The primary goal was to combine the traditional Alentejo winemaking techniques with the skill of the DBR teams and also unite the expression of traditional portuguese grape varieties with other new and noble varieties thus enhancing complexity and elegance.

The plan has led to new plantations and the renovation of the vineyards, including systematic tying up of the vines and a limitation of yields. Major investments were also made in the Herdade das Carvalhas chais, including a new cellar, the purchase of stainless steel vats with temperature monitoring and pneumatic presses.

Now integrated into Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite), Quinta do Carmo features a 150 hectare vineyard that is gradually reaching maturity. This renewal has done much to enhance the wines, and the first vintages under the new management (2000/2001) reveals clearly the excellent combination of the 'Terroir' and the 'savoir faire!'

This wine has spent 12 months in oak, including 35% in new barrels. It is a blend of traditional Portuguese grapes including 40-60% Tempranillo, or Aragonez as it is known locally, and between 15-30% of Alicante, Periquita and Trincadeira. The balance is made up of traditional french grapes including Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. This has produced a sunny wine whose maturity and aromas are typical of its traditional grapes, combined masterfully with classic frence varietals.

Quinta do Carmo is distinguished firstly by its soil and with the addition of Domaines Barons de Rothschild winemaking team's know-how it has allowed this wine to reach new levels of complexity and elegance.

Chateau Cos d'Estournel LES PAGODES de COS Saint Estephe

Chateau Cos d'Estournel 2eme Cru Classe Saint Estephe
In 1811, Louis Gaspard d'Estournel set out to produce wine of the very best quality in the hamlet of Cos. He was a dealer in Arab horses, which were shipped to and from the Far East, accompanied, eventually, by some bottles of the Estournel wine. Some of the consignment came back and it was noticed that the bottles had developed exceedingly well. D'Estournel decided all of his wine would make a sea journey and to emphasise his connections with the Far East he built a chateau in the style of an Oriental temple, complete with Pagoda towers. The success of these wines is due to the expert management of Bruno Prats who has invested on a large scale and has made many fundamental improvements. The vigorous taste holds nuances of ripe fruit, plus chocolate, coffee and spices. Gravel ridges, mixed with sand, clay and a limestone subsoil. 50-100% of virgin barriques new oak. "Massive in the mouth and one of the most structured and concentrated young Cos d'Estournels I have ever tasted...should last for 30-35 years. It is fabulous Cos, but patience is required. Anticipated maturity, 2006-2030." Parker, 93+. (12 x 75 cl)
