Odfjell Vineyards ARMADOR Syrah Maipo Valley Chile
Over 20 years ago, the pioneering Norwegian Armador, Dan Odfjell discovered and fell in love with a small corner of the famous Maipo Valley, Chile. Born of rain in Bergen, Norway, he could not resist the attraction of the austral sun in this Virgilian setting. Serendipity would later show that he had found land in Chile's premium red wine producing valley, where vitis vinifera has been cultivated since the 17th century. Here a soothing coastal breeze produces a microclimate conducive to distinct and beautiful wines on the 85 hectares planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Carmenere, Syrah, Cabernet Franc and Malbec. This Maipo Valley hand harvested Syrah has a little Cabernet Sauvignon and is partly aged in oak to give that Odfjell Vineyard style. Showing an intense red violet colour, on the nose this Syrah develops a blend of floral notes including violet, roses, sweet corn; as well as plum and blackberry fruit, vanilla and smoky/leathy notes. The wine's attack on the palate is nice with mature and firm tannins. (6 x 75 cl)

Joseph Phelps Vineyards Syrah Napa Valley California
Founded in 1972, Joseph Phelps Vineyards is an independent, estate-based winery located outside of St. Helena. Perched on a knoll in bucolic Spring Valley, the graceful redwood winery overlooks vineyard-studded hills, the town of St. Helena and the Mayacamas Mountains to the west. Long known for his innovative spirit and passion for quality, Joe Phelps pioneered a number of 'firsts' in the early years of the winery. The 1974 Insignia — released in the spring of 1978 — was the first Bordeaux-style blend produced in California under a proprietary label. The release of the 1974 Syrah in 1977 sparked industry-wide interest in a remarkable French varietal whose plantings in California had disappeared and been virtually forgotten for over half a century. And in 1990, after years of research, a whole new family of Rhône-style wines was introduced which today includes Syrah, Viognier and a Chateauneuf-du-Pape style blend called Le Mistral. 100% Napa Syrah from estate-grown grapes and independent growers . The grapes were harvested at an average 24.4° Brix, fermented in stainless steel tanks, then aged 20 months in a combination of two-to-three-year-old French oak barrels , and new French oak . The wine was subsequently blended and bottled. Dark berry coloured, medium-bodied red with a floral, white pepper nose, concentrated plum and black cherry flavours, and a rich, lingering finish.
