The family have always been involved in farming activities centred in the region where the river Douro flows into Portugal. The aim has always been the production of high quality olive oil and wine, sourced exclusively from its 220 hectares of olive groves and 62 hectares of vineyards around the village of Almendra. This wine is produced from vines up to 40 years old that are 100% hand harvested in 25 Kg cases which are sent to the winery under refrigeration by truck. Once in the winery the grapes, Touriga Naçional, Roriz and Franca, are crushed and destemmed and undergo cold maceration for 48 hours. Afterwards alcoholic fermentation for 15 days is followed by malolactic fermentation for a further 15 days. Next half of the wine is matured for 4 months in American extra fine grain oak barrels, while the other 50% is aged in stainless steel tanks. Finally the wine is bottled unfiltered. The care taken from the vineyard to the winery has produced a deep red coloured wine showing sophisticated aromas of black blackberries, mulberry, and black cherry. This is followed by the seductive flavours of black figs and liquorice, while the palate rounds off with hints of toasted oak, warm spicy fruit and a lovely silky texture.
