Organic. The first 100% Graciano wine in the world! Incredibly good, yet highly unusual wine from Rioja. Graciano is a grape normally blended in small quantities with Tempranillo and Garnacha. Here it exhibits all its style unencumbered by other grape varieties. Aged in oak for six months, its perfumed, blueberry fruit and spicy complexity make this an altogether excellent wine. Organic. A beautiful salmon-pink in colour, this wine is our second new entry from the acclaimed Ijalba Estate. Vibrant strawberry fruit is the overwhelming flavour in this highly distinctive wine. Is made in tiny quantities and only in the best vintages. In some years they will add some Cabernet Sauvignon from the vineyard planted in 1927. This wine was aged in new French oak for 16 months. It is powerful and complex with savoury dark flavours combining with the oak to give a wine of great intensity. It is a revelation. (6 x 75 cl)
The delicious, vibrant Blanco, made from Viura and Malvasia, is fermented in new American oak with batonnage taking place in the first few weeks after fermentation . It is then aged on fine lees for 4 months. The result is a revelation: white Rioja that is fresh and balanced yet full of flavour. A zesty, smokey character on the nose that gives way to good weight on the palate, the oak supporting rather than masking the fruit. (12 x 75 cl)
The two premium wines Seleccion and Expression are only made in the best vintages. As the name indicates, the fruit is selected from the best parcels of old vine Tempranillo and Graciano . It is aged in new and one year old French oak for around 16 months. It is a wine of great intensity and power with an appealing suppleness to the tannins and mouth-filling sweetness to the fruit. The Izadi Rioja Crianza is impressive – an intense, youthful purple in colour, with the vanilla oak perfumes well integrated with the juicy black fruit on the palate and fine, savoury tannins. The grapes for this wine come from vineyards situated at 600 metres above sea level so warm days give way to cool nights, encouraging the aromatic qualities in the grapes to develop. The grapes are destemmed and fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks then the wine is aged in 225L barriques for 14 months. Izadi is based in Villabuena in the Rioja Alavesa, the highest part of Rioja. The hillside winery was founded in 1987 by Gonzalo Anton as a modern breakaway from the traditional style of wine produced by other members of his family. As son Lalo Anton says, ‘the whole concept of Izadi really started around wanting to produce wine to satisfy the needs of our friends over a meal’. The winemaking philosophy is beautifully simple, as Lalo explains; ‘Flexibility is the key – we follow a style but conditions change with each vintage. Order, flexibility and cleanliness are the keys for us to produce modern, international wines that are true to their roots and a natural expression of the area’. (12 x 75 cl)
