The Domaine de Villemajou comprises 90 hectares of south and south-east facing vineyards in the terroir of Boutenac, renowned as the best area of the Corbieres appellation. The clay and limestone gravelly stones heat up in the daytime and then reflect the heat onto the vines at night. Winemaking on the domaine dates back to Roman times when it was named the Villa Major (Hence the name of this Domaine) meaning the big villa which then housed the emperor Avitus. It is the oldest winemaking property in the Corbieres where pieces of Roman vases and other antiquities are frequently dug up in the vineyards. The varieties are old Carignan (40%), Grenache (30%), Syrah (20%) and Mourvedre (10%) while the grapes are picked by hand and placed in cement vats for carbonic maceration and thereafter into oak for maturation. Black fruits dominate as berries and cherries, backed up by liquorice, vanilla, balsamic aromas and masses of sweet spice.
