The vines are mainly planted on marl slopes overlooking the Cotes des Bars, and there is a considerable amount of limestone soil. Irancy, generally, is a brilliant ruby-red hued wine with a robust flavour, usually when the Pinot Noir has been blended with the local variety, the Cesar. The Cuvee Emeline sees some wood and displays headier scents of black-skinned fruit with a hint of spice and leather. The wines may appear austere in youth, but they grow elegant and spirited after a few years' ageing or with a stint in a decanter.
