Cruz de Piedra is the result of a collaboration between Australian winemaker Michael Goundrey, David Courtenay-Clack and the go ahead winemaker Jesus Nevasquez, at the Co-oparativa Virgen de la Sierra in Villaroya, Calatayud in the region of Aragon in Northern Spain. The yield from the vines, which need virtually no fungicides or insecticides, is extremely low. The Garnacha has remarkable concentration of berry fruit with an edge of spiciness found only in the very best of their type. Drink it young and vigorous or let it age and soften for a year or so. Covinca was founded in 1987 after the merger of 2 cooperatives; that of the Almonacid de la Sierra and the Longares . Today, Covinca is managed by a young but experienced team representing over 700 members who together possess 3,000 hectares of vineyards and are the third largest bodega in Carinena. Carinena is one of the oldest Denominaciones de Origen in Spain and the oldest in Aragon. Viticulture began in the time of the Romans where indigenous grape varieties of Garnacha and Carinena were then taken to other parts of the Roman Empire . The Carinena Denominacion de Origen is situated 56 km south east of Zaragoza, Aragon, and is situated in the Iberica mountain range between the Campo de Carinena valley and the Ebro river. The Denominacion covers 50,000 hectares and has a long viticultural tradition and rich cultural heritage dating from the mudejar period. Generally the climate is arid in Carinena, with an annual rainfall of 350mm. The summers are dry and sunny, the winters are cold and the area often feels the effects of the 'el Cierzo' wind, which contributes to the dryness of the climate. Cherry coloured wine the bouquet is reminiscent of red fruit, raspberry, with hints of truffles. Full bodied, intense with balancing acidity gives the wine a good structure and a long finish.
