This was Manoel Pinto de Azevedo's retreat from the hustle and bustle of industry in Porto. He bought an old manor house and surrounding lands in 1913 and frequently hosted shooting parties and family get-togethers. Later he planted vineyards and built a winery to slake the thirsts of his guests. Over the years the reputation of the wine grew and his successors developed the vineyards further, however it was not until the 1990's that consistency of quality was achieved. Maria Antonio Pinto de Azevedo Mascarenhas now heads this unique estate and together with forward thinking winemaker Rui Cunha are taking quality to new heights. This wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Touriga Nacional and Tinta Roriz, that additionally make up the majority of the vareital stock, planted on south-facing slatey schist slopes at about 500 meters above sea level. Crafted from old vines including Cabernet Sauvignon it is an intensely flavoured wine with deep and broody herbal black fruits notes and warm rich flavours. The tannins are firm and fine but do not dominate while the finish is long with delicious persistence. (6 x 75 cl)

It may surprise some onlookers, then, to see Dirk Niepoort at the cutting edge of fine table wine production in the Douro, treading a path which other premium shippers have felt decidedly uncomfortable about. However, this is Dirk Niepoort a vigneron and winemaker extraordinaire, whose passion for old vines, low yields and terroir are as applicable to table wine as they are to great port. The first commercial release of Redoma Tinto was 1991 and it was warmly met by customers and the press alike. Dirk hasn`t looked back since, and now these wines are regarded as some of the very best in all Portugal. This wine uses old vines from Quinta do Carril and Pinhao valley vineyards, where Tinta Amarela grape dominates. Great care is taken from the vineyard; where Tinta Amarela, Toutriga Franca and Tinta Roriz are selected; to the winery in producing this wine. After fermentation it is aged in new oak barrels and this is where Dirk Niepoort makes a statement of authenticity. Showing big ripe fruit and well integrated oak it combines with good acidity to keep this wine elegant. (6 x 75 cl)

However, this is Dirk Niepoort a vigneron and winemaker extraordinaire, whose passion for old vines, low yields and terroir are as applicable to table wine as they are to great port. Here the main varieties used in this wine are Touriga Nacional and Tinta Amarela, from 20 year old vines at Quinta de Napoles. After harvest some of the grapes are fermented in lagares for greater complexity and the resulting blend was aged in a mix of new and used French oak barrels. The care taken in producing this wine has resulted in a spicy, fruity nose with ripe, elegant black fruit flavours including herbs and a hint of oak. The good acidity enhances the appeal overall, and gives the wine a long finish. (6 x 75 cl)
