The Castano family has 410 hectares of vineyards in Yecla in south eastern Spain. They symbolise the best of what southern Spain has to offer: rich, warm climate wines made from grapes grown at altitude and transformed into robustly modern wines.
The vineyard represents 400 hectares in four different areas of Yecla. A selection of low-yielding old vines (40 years old) from unirrigated land are used to produce this wine. These blocks are situated in our estate "Las Gruesas", 800 metres above sea level, with a stony-limy soil.It has minimum temperatures of -10ºC in winter and up to 42ºC in summer. The area has an average rainfall with limited but torrential rains.
The harvest is made during the first week of October. This is made in boxes of 18 Kg. and the first selection is made in the vineyard followed by a second one made in the winery. After a soft destemming, they use the traditional vinification system with long maceration period of 40 days. Light pump-over and fermentation at a controlled temperature of 25º-26ºC. A slight pneumatic pressing and ageing in new French and American oak for 13 months.
