Pieropan CALVARINO Soave Classico Veneto

It is a brilliant, straw yellow colour with greenish hints and the delicate nose is reminiscent of almond blossoms and marzipan. Characterised by good depth of fruit on the palate this white is nicely balanced by a zingy acidity that enhances its long length. This 30-hectare estate is situated in the heart of the Soave Classico zone in the Veneto, north eastern Italy. Founded by Leonildo Pieropan in 1890 and subsequently run by his two sons, Fausto and Gustavo, it was the youthful enthusiasm of his grandson Leonildo, known as Nino, that revolutionised it. Pieropan attaches enormous importance to his vineyards as a source of the high quality fruit that characterises his wines. After taking over the estate, he acquired crus such as Pigno, Palestrello, La Santa and took pains to expand the existing vineyards of Calvarino and La Rocca. The vineyards are planted primarily with Garganega and Trebbiano di Soave. Pieropan believes that excellence derives from assiduous attention to detail 'from the moment you pick up the secateurs, to the time the cork goes into the bottle'. The Calvarino Soave Classico is light gold in colour, with greenish reflections when young, becoming more golden in colour with age. On the nose it is perfumed and floral, with notes of elderflower and fresh cherries, and a touch of lemon when young. It is restrained but intense on the palate, with tightly knit, almond flavours which develop slowly in the glass. It is very long and elegant on the finish. Calvarino takes its name (6 x 75 cl)

The Calvarino vineyard is the original nucleus of the family homestead was first produced in 1971. A blend of Garganega, that gives structure and acidity, dominates this wine while there is some Trebbiano di Soave for perfume and richness of flavour. This white has a subtle almondy character enhanced by minerally, honeyed flavours on the palate. The Calvarino sees no oak, so expresses with great purity the character of this outstanding vineyard. Le Colombare from Pieropan is obtained from the shrivelled recie of choice Garganega grapes, the top part of each bunch, with the ripest and best exposed berries. The bunches are laid out on traditional straw mats, in well aired rooms for a few months. In early spring, the semi-dried grapes are pressed, and the resulting juice is fermented and aged in oak barrels for two years. Intense gold, almost amber coloured, delicately reminiscent of exotic fruit and apricots on the nose, its initial impression on the palate is delicately sweet, a prelude to pleasing and unexpected aromatic complexity. Pieropan’s estate covers 30 hectares of vineyard, all of which are situated on the hills of the Soave Classico zone. The Pieropan family has been producing wines in Soave since the 1860s. Indeed, they were the first producer to bottle a wine with the name Soave on the label, in the early 1930s. Nino Pieropan took over from his father in 1970, and was the first to produce a single vineyard wine, Calvarino, in 1971. The Calvarino vineyard has been in the family since 1901. (6 x 50 cl)

On the nose it is delicately perfumed, with aromas of white flowers, and almondy notes characteristic of good Soave Classico. Whilst his two sons, Fausto and Gustavo took on the company and ran it with the same passion, it was however, the youthful enthusiasm of his grandson Leonildo that revolutionised it into the company it is today. La Rocca is, as always, undoubtedly the greatest expression of Soave. Named after the eponymous vineyard that sits above the castello on a limestone outcrop unique in Soave, La Rocca is made solely from Garganega and is rich, spicy, long and complex. Fermentation takes place in used 500 litre oak casks , before being transferred to large casks. The oak enhances the natural richness of the old Garganega vines to produce one of Italy's great wines.
