The wacky team at d'Arenberg continue to expand their range of wines along with their ever-eccentric labels. Lime and honeysuckle are backed up by floral pear-drop hints
Tasting Note Soft, friendly and full of beans with bags of ripe, sun-packed black and red fruit with just a hint of peppery spice. Silky tannins and fresh acidity keep the fruit within the bounds of decency. Ready to go now, this will give some serious pleasure over the next year or three. 14.5% The d'Arenberg Story Joseph Rowe Osborn, founder of d’Arenberg and patron of the turf, bought his first McLaren Vale vineyards with the winnings of his racehorse, Footbolt, whose name lives on in Shiraz form. His grandson d’Arry and great-grandson Chester inherited the business and have built it into one of Australia’s best loved wineries. The last decade has seen Chester develop a range of white wines every bit as individual and thrilling as the reds with which the company made its name. With the iconic red stripe labels and funky names d’Arenberg’s wines have a loyal following, eager for more of the rich, concentrated fruit for which they are famous. (12 x 75 cl)

Well-balanced, restrained blend of these two perfumed varieties with honeyed apricot fruit on the palate and a lovely steely citrus character, it is a worthy gold medal winner but sadly in short supply. The Hermit Crab McLaren Vale Viognier Marsanne has a green, brilliant mid-straw colour and exhibits fresh and tropical fruit with a strong emphasis on stone fruits, pineapple, mango and honeysuckle. The youthful palate is immediately luscious with those tropical fruit, honeysuckle and stone fruit flavours balanced by fresh grapefruit and light butter tastes, before a long persistent fruit finish. Why the name Hermit Crab? Many of McLaren Vale's vineyards are on free- draining soils underlain with limestone, formed by the calcareous remains of the local fauna which lived in the shallow seas which once covered what is now McLaren Vale. One such creature was the Hermit Crab, a reclusive little critter, which still inhabits the cast off shells of other crustaceans on our coastlines. The Osborn family and Chester in particular thought this was exactly the right name for this first ever blend of these two varieties from McLaren Vale. This is because the Hermit Crab is best enjoyed with shell food and seafood dishes, and the fact that 'Hermit' is the abbreviation of the name of the region in France where the Marsanne grape predominates. Pronounced blackcurrant and gentle mint aromas, the palate displays medium-bodied black fruits, some cedar notes and a mint edge on the finish. (12 x 75 cl)
