A bit about Springfield Estate Brother and sister team Abrie and Jeanette Bruwer are the complete opposite of your typical university trained have-cultured-yeast-will-travel flying winemakers. Self-taught with a profound love of the arid, rocky, unforgiving Robertson terroir that they call home, the Bruwers make wines that have a distinct sense of place. These are wines hewn from the ground rather than made to a recipe in a lab and Springfield is now one of the first names to appear on any list of ‘Top SA Wineries’. If you ever get the chance to go and visit Jeanette and Abrie at Springfield, you'll understand why this single vineyard Sauvignon is called Life from Stone. The rocky, arid terroir looks just about the most inhospitable place a plant could choose to grow. Make no mistake, these vines really struggle for their art. Set in the heart of the mountain-ringed Robertson Valley in South Africa's Western Cape Province, Springfield Estate is a vibrant, family-run wine farm. It is owned by the Bruwer family, fourth-generation wine farmers and ninth-generation descendants of the Bruères, French Huguenots who came to South Africa from the Loire in 1688 with bundles of vines under their arms. Springfield Estate Methode Ancienne Chardonnay is in the ancient style of Burgundy, a technique with wild yeast and no fining/filtration rarely used in the new world. The result is a wine of distinctive and classical character. It will develop slowly and is made to last, we hope, a lifetime. Tropical fruit nuances layered by lime and cream carried through to a pallet of full warm creamy mouth-feel. A big wine with classical character. (6 x 75 cl)
