Pio Cesare Barolo DOCG Piemonte

The colour is an intense glossy garnet, with orange reflections. The bouquet is ethereal, with hints of violets, blackberry jam, licorice and cloves. The palate is dry and austere, with a lingering hint of almonds. The Nebbiolo grapes used to produce this Barolo come from the family vineyards around the village of Serralunga d'Alba. Their own grapes account for about 70% of our production, and they also source grapes from the most favourable areas in Castiglione Falletto and Monforte, using the same producers they have been using for the last hundred years. These are growers with whom we have been dealing for generations, and the relationships are much deeper than normal business relationships. This Barolo has always been produced through careful blending of grapes from different vineyards. Pio Cesare stubbornly sticks to this tradition because they believe that the union of grapes from different vineyards makes their Barolo unique. The grapes from Serralunga give a full body, the ones from Castiglione Falletto offer an ethereal and tempting nose, and those from Monforte provide class and a refined nature. Ornato is a more modern in style than Pio Cesare traditional Barolo, but still true to its roots. The Barolo Ornato is a big Barolo, deep, round and austere, with a remarkably long life, yet approachable in its youth while the colour is intense and deep, almost impenetrable. The palate is deep and rich, showing good structure, with a long finish. Ornato is the name of the estate vineyard in Serralunga d'Alba. From the grapes of this estate, Pio Cesare have always produced traditional Barolo, but in 1985 they decided to select a small quantity of Nebbiolo from two vines to create a Barolo that reflects the marvellous characteristics of the Serralunga soil. The first Barolo Ornato was produced in 1985. Since then, it is only produced in outstanding years. (6 x 75 cl)

Outstanding, prestigious wine with delicious, sweet fruit, soft, rich tannins that are elegant but complex while it has a big structure and very long finish. It might be considered the 'king' of Pio's wines for its character. This wine comes from a single vineyard on the Ornato estate, in Serralunga d'Alba in the heart of Barolo. Once in the winery the fruit undergoes skin contact for 15 days in stainless steel vats; 40% aged in new French oak barrels, the other 60% in Yugoslavian oak and finally one month in the bottle before release.
