One of the most famous estates in Chianti Classico, Castello di Volpaia is owned by the elegant Giovanella Stianti and run by enologist Maurizio Castelli. The modern winemaking equipment is discreetly arranged within the confines of the medieval hamlet of Volpaia near Radda. The vineyards include some of the highest in the Classico area, up to 600m. This influences the style of the Volpaia wines, which are always rich in floral perfumes and elegant in texture. This is true across the range, from the beautifully balanced Chianti Classico, to the more oaky and developed Riserva and through to the two fine “supertuscans”. Coltassala is mainly Sangiovese, with ripe plummy fruit, controlled oak flavours and fine tannins. Balifico adds one third Cabernet Sauvignon to the Sangiovese, bringing a more berry fruity character and equally notable aromatic finish. Vintage: 1999. Style: Soft & Supple Reds.
