A wonderful character and a fine wine-maker, Luc de Conti's exuberant wines reflect his personality. Luc is a true Vinarchiste, looking for purity and intensity, the maximum expression of the potential of the grapes. In the vineyard the soil is nourished with seaweed and silica treatments to encourage microbial activity. According to him the soil is lifeless and it is a fifteen year process to rid the ground of pollutants. Manual picking and selection of ripe grapes is essential; on the top cuvées there are several tries in the vineyard, and the wine will only be released if it reaches the highest of standards. Alphonse Mellot LA MOUSSIERE Rouge Sancerre
Description: At the beginning of the nineteenth century, Alphonse Mellot founded a tavern in Sancerre where one could savour the local wines and so began a flourishing trade that was to continue. In 1881 he was granted a licence to ship his wine throughout France and all over the World. This marked the beginning of a pacific conquest which has been pursued and developed by the family business from father to son ever since, with the eldest son continuing to bear the name of the Founder Alphonse. Today, the old winemaking tradition is perpetuated by Alphonse Mellot, father and son, the 18th and 19th to bear the name. The wines are produced from the upper Sancerre vineyard, the most famous of which is the Domaine Le Moussiere. Its exceptional quality has led to it being officially classified as a unique category amongst the Sancerre wines. The Domaine Le Moussiere comprises one single vineyard of over thirty hectares. It's ideally exposed location with chalk soil and specific sub-soil are all perfect conditions for the cultivation of the vine. From South/South West and South/South East facing vineyards comes the Sancerre rouge La Moussiere, produced from young vines to be just like biting into the grapes themselves ripe and richly red, a wine that is both tender and vigorous. Harvested by hand every care is taken from the vineyard to the winery and thanks to a vibrating table followed by a sorting table, all grapes have been sorted, stemmed and transported into the wine vats by conveyor belt. Finally, it is fermented in 60 hl truncated wooden vats using 80 to 100% new casks for ageing on fine lees over a period varying between 10 and 18 months. This Pinot Noir is a very fine deep crimson colour while the nose has hints of small red and black fruit like raspberries, currants, mulberries and morello cherries, with spicy traces of pink peppercorns, vanilla and cinnamon. The mouth is mellow, well rounded and well structured with a woody background that has spicy traces and aromas of fruit. A wine long in the mouth it is high in alcohol and pleasant, a real winner. Chateau Fleur de Rol Grand Cru St Emilion
Description: Fleur de Rol employs the ubiquitous Michel Rolland as a consultant. The grapes are harvested by hand and after destemming, the wine is vinified traditionally in cement-epoxy vats with frequent temperature controls. The wine is then aged for 12 to 18 months in high quality oak barrels of which one third are new. This is a blend of 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc producing lots of charred, smoky oak on the big, bold and ambitious nose with bags of tar and black fruit. The skin extract is very evident and there is plenty of toasty vanilla flavours from the oak with dark fruit and tar again on the palate. While there is a grippy, confident finish. (12 x 75 cl)
