Pelissero PIANI Barbera d'Alba DOC
Description: Azienda Agricola Pelissero is a family-run vine-growing estate located in the district of Treiso, in the heart of Barbaresco. Many gradual changes have been performed by the successive generations of the Pelisseros, who transformed the grape-selling activity started by Giovanni Pelissero into winemaking of all the estate-grown grapes. Winemaking takes place in a cellar surrounded by vineyards situated in a zone called Augenta. The first bottles of wine dated back to 1960 and were produced by Luigi Pelissero, whose work was followed by his son, Oenologist Giorgio who, after finishing his studies, decided to work full time at the winery. The Pelissero family takes care of all the activities from pruning the vines to marketing the wine. The estate consists of twenty hectares of vineyards which yield a total of 80,000 to 100,000 bottles of wine. The grapes for this Barbaresco come from rented vineyards located on hills with slopes facing south-west. The wine uses the vines with an average age twenty-five years old when Pelissero produced Piani for the first time in 1994. Clay, present in the soil in small quantities, confers the wine some tannic astringency that makes it pleasantly dry. Produced using modern equipment and techniques but still in a traditional way, this wine combines the harshness of the grape variety with the flexibility of the new style coming from the international market. After 18 months spent in either oak casks or barriques, the wine is blended in equal proportion, to avoid too much wood on the palate. The wine then spends a further nine months in bottle before being made available. A vivacious ruby red coloured wine it's complex and fruity aromas go to the nose, with evident notes of wood. Its dry personality and tannic sensations explode in the mouth, creating a velvety and wrapping frame typical of this variety with a great finish. (12 x 75 cl)
