Coleraine derives its name from the Coleraine vineyard, home of John & Wendy Buck of Te Mata Estate. John's late grandfather came from Coleraine in Northern Ireland and the name has been maintained through the family properties to the wine. The first Coleraine was made from the 1982 vintage and created an instant sensation within New Zealand for unsurpassed quality. Originally a single vineyard wine, from 1989 Coleraine has been an assemblage of the finest Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc wines produced from thirty plots within Te Mata Estate's nine Hawke's Bay vineyards. This wine has a saturated magenta colour and aromas of blackcurrants, very ripe cherries and marzipan. Perfectly ripe and floral, it shows flavours of brambly blackcurrants and dark cherry syrup with hints of rosemary. The palate is powerful and very elegant with fine grained tannins leading to a long, firm finish (6 x 75 cl)

Rustenberg JOHN X MERRIMAN Stellenbosch RSA
Description: Rustenberg has a wine-growing history dating back to 1682, when Roelof Pasman from Meurs, near the Rhine, recognised its wine-growing potential. By 1781 some 3000 cases of wine were produced on the farm. Production doubled by the end of the century and a new cellar was built. Wine has been bottled at this cellar ever since in an unbroken period dating back to 1892. Earlier in its history Rustenberg was split in two, the additional vineyard being named Schoongezicht. Rustenberg was its peak around 1812, with beautiful homesteads and flourishing vineyards, but by mid-century, recession coupled with disease in the vines, brought bankruptcy and dispossession. Schoongezicht was rescued in 1892 by John X Merriman , and Rustenberg by his brother-in-law Sir Jacob Barry. Together they revitalised the farms, fruit was sent to Covent Garden; new vines were grafted onto disease-resistant American rootstock; while wines were exported to England and the Continent. In 1941 Peter and Pamela Barlow bought Rustenberg, later acquiring Schoongezicht and reuniting the properties. Their son Simon took over the running of the farm in 1987, while the Barlows have been at Rustenberg for over 60 years, it is the longest period any one family has owned the farm. This wine is a blend of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 46% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc where traditional fermentation was undertaken. With regular oxidative pumpovers employed to maximise colour extraction and assist in tannin polymerization it has enabled the grapes to express the Rustenberg terroir. Malolactic fermentation and maturation in French barriques followed and the wine was bottled 20 months later using 225L 50% new French oak barrels. Well rounded wine which will increase in complexity and character with bottle age as is customary of Rustenberg's red wines. Aromas of spice and red fruit balanced by fine, elegant tannins (12 x 75 cl)

Burmester 1990 COLHEITA Port
Description: W. Burmester was founded in 1750. Historically they bought their young wine from prime vineyards in the Upper Douro from contracted growers. In December 1991 they made a very important purchase of a 120 hectare property in the heart of the upper Douro, Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo, which has consolidated their reputation as serious Port producers and enabled them to offer their first single quinta Port in the great vintage of 1992. The Amorim family who success in the Portuguese cork industry has now purchased Burmester. It has brought new investment coupled with allowing Burmester to remain 100% under Portuguese ownership. The high quality of their Ruby and Tawny belies the competitive price at which they are offered, and they have many followers who enjoy their rich berry fruit characters. In addition to Vintage Port, Burmester also have an exciting range of old, sometimes very old, 'Colheitas' or vintage Tawny, which are today gaining recognition and popularity in the U.K (6 x 75 cl)
