Katnook Coonawarra Merlot South Australia
Description: Tasting Note Soft and ripe with concentrated, juicy plum and blackberry fruit spiced up by vanilla and cinnamon notes from the oak. Full-bodied and well-balanced with flavour to spare. 13.5% Wayne Stehbens and his team at Katnook are making something of a speciality of Merlot in Coonawarra. The region is already well known for its world class Cabernet, and as Bordeaux shows, where Cabernet thrives the chances are Merlot might do pretty well too. Ripe and rounded with fabulous depth of fruit and wonderfully smooth tannins this is a big, characterful wine that really shows Oz's potential for world class Merlot. A bit about Katnook Estate Although the present company was only founded in 1967, the Katnook area had been well known for grape growing since the mid-19th Century, when John Riddoch planted the first Coonawarra vines. In 1980, the arrival of winemaker Wayne Stehbens heralded a new era for Katnook when they began to bottle their own wines for the first time. Since then the company's reputation has rocketed with the wines now recognised as being among the very best in the region. (6 x 75 cl)

Bodegas Faustino PORTIA PRIMA Ribera del Duero DO
Description: Named after the 7th moon of Uranus Portia, and in Latin meaning 'Offering', is a selection of premium red wines from Bodegas Faustino. Portia Prima is the second wine to be released by the Bodega from their winery in Ribera de Duero. Portia Prima is the result of a meticulous selection of Tinta Fina del Pais , from the the best plots in the vineyard. Once in the winery , the wine undergoes 15 months ageing in new French Oak and after light fining with egg whites the wine is aged a further 8 months in the bottle before release. A deep cherry-red wine with youthful hues at the rim, it is showing intense aromas of ripe dark fruit that blend into the wooded aromas from the new oak and develop against a background of peppercorns. Hints of vanilla accompanied by toasty and balsamic notes produce a meaty style in the mouth while the sweet, agreeable tannins develop over the long finish. (6 x 75 cl)

Sogrape MATEUS ROSE Portugal
Description: The master mind behind Mateus Rose a world-leading brand was Sogrape's founder Fernando van Zeller Guedes, who cleverly combined the picturesque qualities of the palace with an original style of label and a beautiful bottle shape to create a unique presentation. The birthplace of Mateus Rose is the historic Mansion depicted in the well known label. This country mansion, a masterpiece of the baroque architecture, dates back to the beginning of the 18th century. The wine itself is another inspired creation, its unique colour and taste pleasing lovers of dry and sweet wines alike. The grapes from which Mateus Rose is made are carefully selected from the best quality red varieties grown in Northern Portugal. As with all Sogrape wines, the greatest care is taken at all stages of production, from vintage through to bottling, thus ensuring that the highest possible standards of quality are consistently maintained. A method called 'bica aberta' with long fermentation under controlled temperatures is used to achieve the particularly well-balanced, fresh and fruity quality of the wine. Available in Half Bottles.
