Description: On the nose, d'Arenberg's Nostalgia exhibits complex, spicy lifted nutty rancio aromas. Caramel, toffee, coffee and butterscotch smells augment dried fruit, especially prune and fig characters, which are also evident on the palate. In the mouth complex oak, fruit and brandy flavours marry to produce a luscious, raisined, spicy nutty and lingering finish. The palate, although generous with English toffee, butterscotch and Christmas cake-like flavours, is well balanced by the drying sensations that come from long ageing in oak. (6 x 37.5 cl)

D'Arenberg OLIVE GROVE Chardonnay McLaren Vale & Adelaide Hills Australia
Description: McLaren Vale’s sandy, ironstone littered soil sustains native scrub, plots of almonds, pine forests and also olive groves, which were planted alongside vineyards by the first settlers in the district. Over the years various varieties of olive trees have sprung up everywhere, on the sides of roads and also in and around the d'Arenberg Chardonnay vineyard and this is where the wines name comes from. The Olive Grove Chardonnay goes through the gentle d’Arenberg process of being crushed in a rubber–toothed Demoisy crusher, before fermentation in various ways. Some of the Chardonnay will be whole bunch pressed straight off skins before going into barrel to finish fermentation there. Traditionally the Olive Grove is a blend of 1/3 each of Chardonnay grapes fermented and matured in stainless steel, 1/3 starts fermentation in stainless steel and then goes into French and American oak to continue fermentation for about 4 weeks, and the final component completes fermentation and maturation for about 5 months in new and older French and American oak. Given time to prove its longevity and most importantly not served over-chilled, d’Arenberg’s The Olive Grove McLaren Vale Chardonnay develops intense, complex honey, cashew, fig and soft toast aromas. Typically, butterscotch, light caramel and hints of fresh tobacco are evident too. The fresh structured mid palate retains its texture but opens slowly into generous sweet banana butterscotch flavours with hints of smoky bacon and green olive tastes before finishing with a persistent developed stone-fruit and chalky texture. Description: The 2001 vintage saw a wet winter followed by a hot January and a dry warm end to ripening. The conditions resulted in concentrated thick-skinned grapes giving wines of considerable weight and tannin structure. Upon release, d'Arenberg's Galvo Garage has a deep, vibrant red-purple colour. The nose shows a complex array of blackcurrant, cassis, compost, mulberries, dark plums, cherries and cut flower stems. Subtle spices of cinnamon, nutmeg and cedar add complexity and show a potential for the wine to open more with time. The wide array of fruits are seen immediately upon tasting and flow elegantly across the mouth in a silky way, gradually tightening in dark, fragrant, compost and lively, dark-berry fruit tannins. The Bordeaux-like tannins are fine and plentiful, with an abundance of intertwined fragrant fruit hanging in the mouth well after the wine has been consumed; a very refreshing but classically styled wine that should age gracefully for many years. As the wine ages, the fruit character will develop and become beautifully truffled with cigarbox flavours, while maintaining the compost and dark fragrant fruits. The fine tannins will become subtler, making the fruit character even more prominent. (6 x 75 cl)

D'Arenberg THE HERMIT CRAB Marsanne Viognier McLaren Vale Australia
Description: Well-balanced, restrained blend of these two perfumed varieties with honeyed apricot fruit on the palate and a lovely steely citrus character, it is a worthy gold medal winner but sadly in short supply. The Hermit Crab McLaren Vale Viognier Marsanne has a green, brilliant mid-straw colour and exhibits fresh and tropical fruit with a strong emphasis on stone fruits, pineapple, mango and honeysuckle. The youthful palate is immediately luscious with those tropical fruit, honeysuckle and stone fruit flavours balanced by fresh grapefruit and light butter tastes, before a long persistent fruit finish. Why the name Hermit Crab? Many of McLaren Vale's vineyards are on free- draining soils underlain with limestone, formed by the calcareous remains of the local fauna which lived in the shallow seas which once covered what is now McLaren Vale. One such creature was the Hermit Crab, a reclusive little critter, which still inhabits the cast off shells of other crustaceans on our coastlines. The Osborn family and Chester in particular thought this was exactly the right name for this first ever blend of these two varieties from McLaren Vale. This is because the Hermit Crab is best enjoyed with shell food and seafood dishes, and the fact that 'Hermit' is the abbreviation of the name of the region in France where the Marsanne grape predominates.
