Robert Plageoles believes in rediscovering what has been lost. Not for him the slavish adherence to global varietals; he has grubbed up his plantings of Sauvignon and concentrated instead on the native Mauzac, in which he has found the potential for a whole range of styles. Mauzac, when dry can produce a fascinating soft style redolent of pears, white cherries and angelica; it is also responsible for sparkling wines and an array of sweeties ranging from the off dry to the unique piercingly dry sherry-like Vin de Voile. Vin d'Autan is made from the obscure Ondenc in vintages when the grapes shrivel and raisin in the warm autumn winds. The style similar to a Beerenauslese or a Tokaji, contriving to be sweet, yet subtly fresh: bruleed autumn apples and pears flecked with syrup and a persistent elegant finish hinting at walnuts. Available in 50 cl bottles. (12 x 50 cl)

Domaine Confuron-Cotetidot Chambolle-Musigny
Description: If you enjoy raunchy, old-fashioned Pinot Noir then Domaine Confuron-Cotetidot is an ideal partner. The vineyards contain a large proportion of old vines and are run ecologically with many steps taken to reduce yields and at harvest the fruit is picked fully ripe. Once in the winery the grapes are cooled and sulphured. Fermentation temperatures are set at 28 degrees to attain the required extraction with three pigeages per day. Confuron is a fanatic for pigeage, immersing himself up to the neck in the vat amidst the dangerously heady fumes. The net result of this is the high extraction of anthocyanins, so expect the wines to have lots of colour and great keeping potential. (12 x 75 cl)

Domaine Mathis Bastian DOMAINE ET TRADITION Pinot Gris Luxembourg
Description: Luxembourg has a long tradition of making wine . Virtually all production is for white and sparkling, the major grape varieties being: Rivaner, Pinot Blanc, Auxerrois, Riesling, Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer. The climate is one of the coolest in Europe for winemaking even rivalling England. Domaine Mathis Bastian, a regular visitor to the Guide Hachette comprises 11.7 hectares of vines on chalky soil located on the exposed slopes of Remich Primerberg overlooking the Moselle. Domaine et Tradition has finesse illustrated by the manner in which the wine evolves so eloquently in the glass from the initial nose of meadow flowers broadening into something earthier: medlars and truffles, finally reenforced by the burgeoning of the secondary mineral aromas. (6 x 75 cl)

Domaine Alain Gautheron Chablis
Description: The Gautheron family has been cultivating vines in Chablis for five generations. The current head of the Domaine is Alain Gautheron, working, with his wife and son Cyril in an effort to carry on the family's traditions. This estate makes classic Chablis with a clear light gold colour, glinting with emerald green. In the mouth the wine is dry as apple-parings and steely with perhaps just a delicate hint of violets and mint. Well balanced with lively acidity, the mouth presents notes of hazelnut and biscuits which add a certain charm and length to the finish. (12 x 75 cl)

Artesano Tinto Tierra Alta Spain
Description: Situated south west of Tarragona in the southernmost zone of the Catalan vineyards, Terra Alta is an extraordinary landscape of limestone terraces and steep slopes and provides a Mediterranean climate for vine-growing with strong continental influences. Positive contrasts afforded by strong differential temperatures and accentuated by the altitude of 350-600m for the vineyards ensure that ripeness of grapes is allied to lovely natural acidity. Low annual rainfall with no resultant rot and very few parasites means that a natural organic viticulture can be practised. The old vines, Grenache and Carignan , are cultivated side-by-side with the international interlopers, Syrah and Cabernet. All the grapes are manually harvested and each variety is vinified separately without sulphur and without recourse to artificial yeasts. Controlled slow fermentation at 25C combined with a five-week cuvaison permits the optimal expression of fruit and terroir. The wine is matured partly in tank and partly in French barrels before assembly. This red is a blend of Grenache , Carignan , Cabernet Sauvignon and a mixture of Syrah, Tempranillo and Lledoner Pelut. The nose is so appealing: red and black fruits mingled with flavours of liquorice and dried herbs. The palate is smooth and consistent and the acidity just perfect. (6 x 75 cl)

Bodegas Terras Gauda PORTA DO MINO Eau-de-Vie Augardente de Galicia
Description: The wines of Terras Gauda are located in the subzone of O Rosal on the terraces that rise steeply above the river Mino which divides Spain from Portugal. At Terras Gauda they distil the Porta do Mino eaux-de-vies from the marc of the Albarino grape. Their meticulous elaboration is inspired by the traditional production methods of O Rosal eaux-de-vie and a desire to achieve a polished potable product. The aromatic composition of the white eaux-de-vie is complex with lovely fragrances, perfectly harmonised, reminiscent of the floral, fruity origins of the grapes, but supplemented also by notes of walnut and coffee bean. (12 x 75 cl)

Chateau Chasse Spleen Cru Bourgeois Moulis
Description: On the "Route des Chateaux" in the Medoc, just after the village of Arcins, to the left after the famous inn the Lion d'Or, are the vineyards of Chasse Spleen. South of the gravelly brow of Grand Poujeaux, this vineyard benefits from a remarkably well drained subsoil and is superbly well exposed to the hot summer sun. The soil is composed of 80% Garonne gravel on a chalky substratum and 20% chalky clay. Before the vines were planted only extremely rustic cereal like rye grew on this land. The climate is also particularly important. The rainy Medoc springtime constitutes a water reserve in the buried tertiary shelf. A hot summer is hard on the vines, and means that the roots must go even deeper underground for their necessary water supply. The weather and the poor soil are exactly what are needed for the Medoc grape varieties: 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 7% Petit Verdot. The wines, from comparatively old vines, are top class. This is one of the handful of Médoc estates that does not filter either after the malolactic fermentation or before bottling. The best vintages have remarkable depth: cassis fruits, extract, body and texture with a hint of plums and spicy new oak . (12 x 75 cl)

Weingut Kofererhof Kerner Valle Isarco Alto-Adige
Description: Acquired and managed by the Kerschbaumer family since 1940, the Kofererhof estate has existed in southern Tyrol, a region that is as Austrian in spirit as it is Italian, for over 850 years. In 1995, the winery started to bottle its own wines after having sold its fruit to local wineries for years. Kofererhof's tiny 5 hectares of vines are located at the base of the Dolomite mountains between 700 and 800 metres above sea level. At this high altitude, the variation in temperatures from day to night is ideal, and the carefully tended, high-density vineyards yield intensely fragrant, concentrated and well-balanced wines. All grapes are harvested by hand, and attention to detail is paramount in this limited production winery. The quality of these wines raises the bar for all whites from Alto-Adige. The Kerner smells of tangerine and lychee and tastes of peach, apricots and honey with plenty of complex nuances, has a medium to full-bodied texture and refreshing acidity in the finish. It's a rare white wine that manages to achieve plenty of flavour, good texture and complexity without the aid of oak. (6 x 75 cl)

Chateau Filhot 2eme Cru Sauternes
Description: Chateau Filhot has 60 hectares of vineyards, planted with 60 per cent Semillon, 36 per cent Sauvignon Blanc, and 4 per cent Muscadelle. Bordering on the forests of the Landes, and with the small Ciron river flowing through the property, Chateau Filhot has an ideal microclimate for developing 'botrytis cinerea' on the grapes. Only the best grapes are selected and yields are very low as a result, somewhere between 10 and 20 hectolitres per hectare depending on the vintage. This high proportion of Sauvignon and the refusal to use any new oak gives Filhot a fruitier, more aromatic quality than some of the bigger-boned Sauternes. Available in 37.5 cl Half Bottles. (12 x 37.5 cl)
