| Description: |
 |
A small pretty Mediterranean seaside village just north of the Franco-Spanish border, Collioure is considered to have some of the finest wines in the south of France, an unsurprising fact when you realise that its yields are some of the lowest in France. Made predominantly from Grenache Noir, the region's schist soils compare to those of the Douro in Portugal and by law the grapes harvested for Banyuls must contain 254 grams of sugar per litre. The hand-selected grapes are then destemmed, fermentation is stopped by addition of grape brandy and the wine continues to macerate on the skins for a further three weeks before being aged in tanks. Showing summer pudding and mocha flavours as well as dried herbs, prune and caramel this is a well made wine. Available in 50 cl bottles. (12 x 50 cl)

Inama VIGNETI DI FOSCARINO Soave Classico Superiore
Description: The Foscarino is superb, filling the mouth with perfumed apricot fruit and layer upon layer of mineral-salty flavours. In many respects it is similar to great Chablis. The Foscarino hill is the centrepoint of Soave. The volcanic black basalt soils contribute towards this wine's smoky character. Inama's wines exemplify the alliance of a traditional. Inama's wines exemplify the alliance of a traditional local grape with a wonderful terroir. The result is so different from the blanched mealy-mouthed sulphurous soup that masquerades under the Soave label. The grapes for the Lot are destalked and crushed with subsequent skin contact for 4-8 hours. After the grapes are pressed the must is allowed to settle for 24-36 hours at 5°C. Alcoholic and malolactic fermentation take place in new barriques . Prior to racking, batonnage is carried out every 6 weeks for about 8 months. Filtration, through a coarse filter occurs prior to bottling. The wine is rich, voluptuous even, and time in the decanter will soften the toasty oak overtones. In the 1950s Giuseppe Inama, the estate's founder, began purchasing small plots of vineyards in the heart of the Soave Classico region using nothing more than his savings (6 x 75 cl)

Bruno Gottardi Blauburgunder Sudtirol
Description: Bruno Gottardi is known in Austria as a great wine expert and wine merchant with shops in Innsbruck and Vienna. Recently, he has also acquired a reputation as an excellent wine producer. In 1986 he bought Sarnheimhof, a winery located in the village of Mazzon, in the wine-growing region of Unterland, the heart of Sud-Tirol's best Blauburgunder area or Blauburgunder-Himmel as they say locally. Having replanted the vineyard, training the vines on wires, he built a new winery, and in 1995 produced his first vintage. The Blauburgunder fruit deliver a heady and jammy style of sweet plums and blackberries with a complex backbone that keeps you returning to it. (6 x 75 cl)

Domaine Bel Air LES VINGT LIEUX DITS Bourgueil
Description: Les Vingt Lieux Dits, as the name implies, is a cuvee produced from 20 different vineyard sites. Neither fined nor filtered this is dark chunky Bourgueil with all the chunks left in. Aged in futs de chene after a three week maceration this Cabernet Franc exhibits terroir from the gravelly-sandy soils. A balanced and fruity example of this under-rated appellation with plenty of tannin, but not at all aggressive. Morello cherries and blackcurrants, liquorice and green peppers and a touch of undergrowth. Lovely acidity keeps the wine fresh and alive on the palate and enhances those savoury notes. (12 x 75 cl)

Chateau Chasse Spleen Cru Bourgeois Moulis
Description: On the "Route des Chateaux" in the Medoc, just after the village of Arcins, to the left after the famous inn the Lion d'Or, are the vineyards of Chasse Spleen. South of the gravelly brow of Grand Poujeaux, this vineyard benefits from a remarkably well drained subsoil and is superbly well exposed to the hot summer sun. The soil is composed of 80% Garonne gravel on a chalky substratum and 20% chalky clay. Before the vines were planted only extremely rustic cereal like rye grew on this land. The climate is also particularly important. The rainy Medoc springtime constitutes a water reserve in the buried tertiary shelf. A hot summer is hard on the vines, and means that the roots must go even deeper underground for their necessary water supply. The weather and the poor soil are exactly what are needed for the Medoc grape varieties: 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 7% Petit Verdot. The wines, from comparatively old vines, are top class. This is one of the handful of Médoc estates that does not filter either after the malolactic fermentation or before bottling. The best vintages have remarkable depth: cassis fruits, extract, body and texture with a hint of plums and spicy new oak . Available in 1.5 Litre Magnum bottles. (6 x 1.5 Litres)

Domaine Belluard Monseuse Vin De Savoie-Ayze
Description: The village of Ayze is a little commune in the Haute-Savoie situated in the heart of the valley of the Arve between Geneva and Chamonix Mont-Blanc. Vineyards have been established here since the 13th century. The vines are 450m high on exposed south-facing slopes where the soil is composed of glacial sediments, moraines . The Alpine climate ensures a big temperature difference between day and night, ensuring both physiological maturity in the grapes as well as good acidity. The Mondeuse has a terrific colour and a lovely sour cherry twist in the mouth. In 2001 the vineyards started undergoing a total conversion to biodynamic viticulture. (12 x 75 cl)

Domaine Confuron-Cotetidot 1er Cru LES SUCHOTS Vosne-Romanee
Description: If you enjoy raunchy, old-fashioned Pinot Noir then Domaine Confuron-Cotetidot is an ideal partner. The vineyards contain a large proportion of old vines and are run ecologically with many steps taken to reduce yields and at harvest the fruit is picked fully ripe. Once in the winery the grapes are cooled and sulphured. Fermentation temperatures are set at 28 degrees to attain the required extraction with three pigeages per day. Confuron is a fanatic for pigeage, immersing himself up to the neck in the vat amidst the dangerously heady fumes. The net result of this is the high extraction of anthocyanins, so expect the wines to have lots of colour and great keeping potential. (6 x 75 cl)

Francis Ford Coppola RUBICON ESTATE Edizone Pennino Zinfandel Rutherford Napa Valley California
Description: Winemaking and filmmaking are two great art forms that are very important in the development of California. They both start with raw ingredients-in the case of wine, the land and the grapes, and in the case of film, the script and the actors' performances. The winemaker takes these raw materials and ferments and blends. He says yes to this batch, no to that one. The director does the same thing: a series of yeses and nos, from casting and costuming to edits and sound mixes. In both cases you have to start with top notch raw materials-whether it's the land or a script.' -Francis Ford Coppola (6 x 75 cl)

Robert Plageoles Domaine Les Tres Cantous Mauzac Noir Vin de Pays des Côtes du Tarn
Description: Robert Plageoles believes in rediscovering what has been lost. Not for him the slavish adherence to global varietals; he has grubbed up his plantings of Sauvignon and concentrated instead on the native Mauzac, in which he has found the potential for a whole range of styles. Mauzac, when dry can produce a fascinating soft style redolent of pears, white cherries and angelica; it is also responsible for sparkling wines and an array of sweeties ranging from the off dry to the unique piercingly dry sherry-like Vin de Voile. (6 x 75 cl)
