Peter Pliger Gewurztraminer Bressanone Alto-Adige
Description: Peter Pliger, proprietor and winemaker at this tiny property , is considered to be a pace-setter for the Valle Isarco region, which is located in the normally cooler northern portion of Sudtirol. His organically cultivated vines exhibit an aromatic profile and stony minerality that differ from those grown just north or south of his property and are expressive of a unique terroir. Located in the Brenner Pass which contains the Valle Isarco , a 'sweet spot' of 238 hectares of prime winegrowing land between the town of Castelrotto northeast of Bolzano and Novacella north of Bressanone. Now farmed by a passionate group of young winemakers, the pioneer who first drew attention to Valle Isarco's wines is Peter Pliger. Pliger and the rest of the area's growers employ similar winemaking methods including organic farming, stainless steel and acacia vats with no barrique, no malolactic fermentation to produce what Gambero Rosso deems wines of amazing minerality and complexity. The Gewurztraminer is vinified to be very dry and is atypical of the ones generally found in Sudtirol. As with all Pliger's wines this wine will age superbly. (6 x 75 cl)

Cantina Di Barro LO FLAPI Vallee D'Aosta
Description: In local dialect Di Barro means of the barrels. The name is formed from the first syllables Barmaz and Rossan, the former owners as well as parents-in-law of the current owner, who grew wine in the family vineyards in Monte Torrette. Made from the local Moscato grape it is is harvested late (between September and November selecting only the ripest grapes, after pressing in December the wine ferments slowly for a year reaching. Corte Sant'Alda Amarone Della Valpolicella DOC
Description: Marinella Camerani is on a mission to create authentic wines that are strongly connected to the local terroir. Manipulation and intervention are reduced to a minimum, in keeping with the ideal natural balance which is the principle that rules the estate. Continuous research and experimenting, both in the vineyard and in the winery, rediscovering old abandoned practices, techniques that have been replaced by modernity for its own sake, are the daily enterprise of Marinella and her family. Amarone made from half-shrivelled grapes to produce a wine which falls firmly into the 'impegnativo' category, this is beauty and the beast rolled into one: chewy plums, bitter cherries, mocha coffee and what Oz Clarke describes rather well as 'bruised sourness.' The grapes are sourced from various sites with an average altitude of 300 metres and dried in a south-facing breeze-cooled drying loft in small wooden crates, eventually pressed towards the end of February. The cold winter temperatures, the long period of fermentation on the skins and the use of wood during vinification encourage the development of the wine's unique aromas. (6 x 75 cl)

Description: Situated on the St Martin de Mazerat plateau, immediately to the west of the old town, Beau-Sejour Becot lies in the very heart of the Saint-Emilion appellation area. This wine is a blend of 70 % merlot, 24 % cabernet franc and a little 6 % cabernet sauvignon. Once in the winery Malolactic fermentation is undertaken in barrels with 80 to 100 % in new barrels, according to vintage and aged 16 to 18 months in cellar. Chateau Talbot 4eme Cru Classe Saint Julien
Description: This impressive estate owes its name to Connetable Talbot, Commander in Chief of the English Army and hero of the Battle of Castillon in 1453. Chateau Talbot is in an ideal location a short distance from the Gironde Estuary, here the vines grow in fine gravelly rises, which alone are capable of producing the region's great wines. Talbot is one of the most ancient estates in the Medoc and has fortunately passed from one competent manager to another over the centuries, and is fully worthy of its classification in 1855 as a great growth. Today, the Cordier family own Talbot ever since the early 1900's and several generations of the family have shown their deep understanding of the importance of quality. This classified growth of Saint-Julien owes its first-rate reputation to the particularly charming character of its wine. Unfailingly consistent, Talbot embodies with elegance all the complexity of its terroir. Firm, well-rounded tannins offer a smoothness ever present over the years, although being highly concentrated, it can be left to age for many years even though it is tempting to drink it young to enjoy the fullness of its fruity aromas and silken finish. Chateau du Cedre LE GRAND CEDRE Cahors
Description: Pascal Verhaeghe has been the driving force behind the Cahors 'Quality Charter' and quality oozes from these wines. The estate was originally created by Charles Verhaeghe on vineyard land devastated by the frosts in 1956 in Vire-Sur- Lot. His sons Pascal and Jean-Marc duly studied winemaking, the former in Burgundy and California, the latter in Bordeaux. Ecological viticultural methods eschewing weedkillers and chemical fertilizers, yield reduction by serious pruning, leaf stripping for greater sun exposure and air circulation, harvesting the grapes on the verge of overripeness yield the superb raw material essential to create fabulous wines. In the cellars the Verhaeghes aim for softness, richness and harmony through gentle extraction by long vattings and limited pigeage, malolactic fermentation and sensible use of oak. From vines yielding a mere 15hl/ha this black beauty, a thoroughbred in a fine stable of Cahorses, is aged in 500-litre new oak demi-muids with long lees contact. Great care from the vineyard to the winery has produced a strikingly soft, lush and richly fruited wine. (6 x 75 cl)
