Neethlingshof Estate Shiraz Stellenbosch RSA
Description: The history of Neethlingshof Estate spans a period of more than 300 years. In 1692 Willem Barend Lubbe, a German settler, began farming the site he had been granted by Simon van der Stel on the Bottelary Hills overlooking False Bay. He named the farm De Wolwedans, which means 'The Dance of Wolves', because he mistook for wolves the packs of jackals which roamed the countryside in those early days of European settlement. After Lubbe, the farm belonged to the Marais family, who built the wine cellar and the manor house in 1802 and 1814 respectively. Their son-in-law, Marthinus Neethling, earned himself the nickname, 'Lord Neethling', because he 'played the lord' by assuming airs of importance and authority. It was in Neethling's time that the farm was renamed Neethlingshof. Already at that time, the estate was enjoying the reputation of being one of the top wine farms in the area. The Neethlings' daughter married Jacobus Louw and the farm remained in the Louw family for the next 100 years. In 1963 well-known politician Jannie Momberg bought the estate while Gys van der Westhuizen, who had farmed for the Louw family since 1950, continued to run the farm for the Mombergs. In 1973 Schalk van der Westhuizen took over from his father as manager and winemaker and today the young and passionate De Wet Viljoen is at the helm in the cellar. Neethlingshof lies in the very heart of the Cape's winelands in the Stellenboschkloof, flanked by the Bottelary Hills and Papegaaiberg Mountain just outside the town of Stellenbosch. There are many natural advantages contributing to the production of the fine, characterful wines at Neethlingshof. These include a variety of high potential soils derived from decomposed granite, gentle slopes and valleys offering a choice of aspects. As well as the cooling effect of the nearby Atlantic Ocean on the vineyards during the ripening season, it also has the advantage of high altitude which varies between 85 and 250metres. This set of circumstances has allowed 165ha of the 273 ha to be planted with a variety of vines. The Pinotage grapes selected for this wine came from a range of trellised, south-east facing vineyards. The composition of the vineyard is made up of gravel soils with a clay content of about 10%. Set in dryland vineyards the vines ranged in age from 7 to 25 years. Great care has been taken from the harvest by hand to fermentation on the skins for five days and ageing in 225-litre French oak barrels for 24 months. This has produced an inky plum coloured wine with a medium body, velvety texture showing earthy, vegetal aromas and strong, plummy varietal flavours. (12 x 75 cl)

Domaine Rossignol Trapet LES MARIAGES Beaune
Description: Since the 16th century, the ROSSIGNOL family have been winegrowers in Volnay. The TRAPET family were also traditionaly in the wine business; they were originaly set up in Chambolle-Musigny and moved to Gevrey-Chambertin at the end of the 19th century. Recently, 1961 to 1990, Jacques Rossignol with his wife Mado Trapet were both partners in the Domaine Louis Trapet which the activities ceased with the 1989 vintage. By 1990 Jacques Rossignol and his two sons, Nicolas and David subsequently set up the Domaine Rossignol-Trapet, located in Gevrey-Chambertin and owns vineyards in the internationally renowned villages of Beaune, Savigny-Les-Beaune, Morey-Saint-Denis and of course Gevrey-Chambertin. The grapes are exclusively hand-picked and the local pichers come every year and know perfectly how to pick the ripest grapes. When arriving to the harvesting bins, the grapes are again very severely selected. The grapes are put into harvesting bins in the fermentation room, crushed and put into vats.The grapes are destalked between 60 to 80% depending on the year. Pre-fermenting maceration, pumping-over and numerous pigeages also depend on the characteristics of the grapes. The vatting time lasts from 14 to 16 days. Every must is tasted several times a day to decide precisely when decuvage is needed. The Domaine use about 20% new oaks-barrels for each vintage and this proportion of new oak keeps the aromatic finesse and the elegance of the Pinot Noir. In January, generally, malolactic fermentation is finished and the wines are racked. The wines mature slowly in oak-barrels and therefore develop their bouquet and get their stability and structure. Before bottling, wines are slightly fined , and then bottling occurs between 11 and 14 months of barrels maturing. The 2002 vintage is showing the familiar soft fruit flavours that are reflected in the aromas of this wine. Full of delicious soft fruit the soft tannins complement the finish. (12 x 75 cl)

Description: This Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits a vibrant, deep purple colour leading to lifted blackberry, dark chocolate aromas with hints of mint and vanilla. The wine is full-bodied showing generous, berry fruit characters with spicy notes. The palate has good length and is well structured with toasty oak and soft velvety tannins prominent on the finish. This Italian family have six generations of winemaking experience, while the Casella family winery was founded in 1965. Today it is run by John Casella, an extremely talented and highly respected winemaker who aims to produce top qualitv wines from this region. John Casella was amongst the first to select premium vineyard sites used for the production of premium varieties and the vineyards now extend to 250 hectares. The vineyard is planted with Semilion, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Botrytis Semilion, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Gewurztraminer, Colombard, Marsanne, Verdelho and Durif. Casella have made tremendous advances in viticultural techniques, particularly with canopy training, minimal pruning and controlled drip irrigation. These factors, coupled with restricted yields has enabled Casella to produce some of the top wines from this region.
