Dopff au Moulin PINOT GRIS de RIQUEWIHR Alsace
Description: It was in the XVIIth century that Jean-Daniel Dopff, a minister's son, settled in Riquewihr as master-baker and innkeeper under the sign of The Stag. His son, Balthazard-Georges, born in Riquewihr in 1667, became master cooper and was thus the first to associate the name of Dopff with the wine professions. Four generations of Dopff succeeded each other in this line until Jean Dopff, two centuries later, took up the profession of 'gourmet', that is to say a wine merchant under oath. His son Jean Gustave took over the job, in his turn and dedicated himself to the task of building up the family domain. The Dopff enterprise was thus founded, and its history, closely linked to that of Riquewihr and its vineyards, was just beginning. Today, 3 generations manage the Dopff's estate: Pierre Dopff, the Managing Director, his son Pierre-Etienne, General Manager, and Etienne-Arnaud, Logistic and Development Manager, who was appointed at the beginning of the 1998 harvest. The temperatures of September and October play a major role in selecting when to harvest. The grapes become soft and ripe and the rate of sugar increases quickly, while the grape loses its acidity so the wine grower supervises the ripening cycle attentively. Teams of grape-pickers storm the vineyard. The ideal harvest starts in October. However a beautiful Autumn will perhaps allow gathering in November or December, qualities like Vendanges Tardives or even Sélections de Grains Nobles . Wine growers, first and foremost, Dopff uphold the rigourous ethics of their profession, which means that only natural wines from the best grapes are produce under their name and that they are lovingly tended following the traditional methods. Colli di Catone SANT ANTONIO Frascati Superiore DOC
Description: From one of the best producers, clean, fresh minerally white. This wine is a blend of Malvasia del Lazio, Malvasia di Candia, Trebbiano Toscano and a small percentage of Chardonnay. The fruit is from vineyards in cool North-facing sites at 300 – 400 m altitude in Monte Porzio Catone in the classic Frascati production area to the South of Rome. In the vineyard the soil has a volcanic origin rich in potassium, phosphorous and other micro elements. Though quick draining, this type of soil retains sufficient moisture to sustain the vine even in times of drought. The high concentration of minerals in the soil favours the production of top quality fruit. Once in the winery there is a very soft pressing while controlled fermentation of the free run juice is at cool temperatures . Then the wine is left to mature in stainless steel and bottled not before the first week of March following harvest. This has produced a pale straw coloured wine with green tints. Here the clean fruity nose with a steely overtones gives way to a crisp, fresh palate with ripe pear flavours and a clean tangy finish. (12 x 75 cl)

Giacomo Ascheri BRICCO e COSTE Barolo Piemonte
Description: The Giacomo Ascheri Cellars originated in La Morra: in that area, where a place called “Ascheri” still exists, in the early 19th century the first vines were planted and the first wines produced. In 1880 the winery was moved from La Morra to Bra, where it is still situated today. In a world where wines are generally produced with the same grapes, the same technology, the same wood for ageing and above all the same consultants, Ascheri's aim is to obtain a wine which is the expression of the vineyard it comes from, the grapes it was made of, and above all Giacomo Ascheri own ideas. In order to achieve this, Giacomo Ascheri have chosen a natural approach, with a moderate use of technology, without changing the nature of the wine with special procedures. They have attached new importance to old oak barrel ageing making choices entirely by ourselves. Produced in the Sorano vineyard in Serralunga d’Alba with South/South West facing slopes and an altitude which ranges from 280 to 350 m above sea level. The vineyards in the Sorano Estate are planted with Nebbiolo and Dolcetto vines, that produce wines of outstanding richness. This 100% Nebbiolo is hand harvested in mid October and aged 6 months in stainless Steel tanks followed by 28 months in Slavonian oak 60% old, 40% new and a further 10 months in the bottle. Bright garnet red colour this Ascheri has a complex bouquet with a small fruits scent, elegant and with a hint of mint. Full palate, powerful and balanced wine it is harmonious and exceptionally long-lived, a remarkably classy wine, extraordinarily rich and complex that is reflected in the finish. (6 x 75 cl)
